Weekend Box Office Thread - Sept 12 - 14 '08 - B.O. Preys, Kills, and Burns holdovers

As expected, Burn After Reading is neck and neck with another Tyler Perry abortion. Righteous Kill seems to be off to a decent start, and The Women got off to a soft start. It's too close to call who will come out on top this weekend, as only 1 of the top 3 is rated PG-13, I'm going with it to be the winner - Tyler Perry seems bound to get yet another #1.

Abortion is right. Perry is right up there with the worst directors/writers EVER! When I saw the trailer for "Family", I literally had food come up. Shame on Kathy Bates for signing up to do shit like this. Second crap feel good movie in a row. The other being "Bonneville".

If Perry's film was going to be #1 this weekend, it probably would've needed to win Friday. I don't see it jumping much from Fri-Sat, so I'm going with Burn After Reading at the top.

Is it too late for me to see, and pay for, three more viewings of "Burn After Reading" to beat out the latest Tyler Perry abomination!? To ensure a number one top spot??

Yeah, my guess is the TPA will be frontloaded on Friday. Burn After Reading should be safe.

Early estimates say you guys are right with $19.5m for Burn After Reading, $18.5m for Tyler P's flick. $11m for The Women.

Looks like Burn is estimated to win the weekend soundly.

Wow, Bangkok Dangerous took a dive. Dark Knight keeps on trucking.

I wouldn't be surprised if you see a large Sunday boost for Family That Preys. A lot of Tyler Perry fans go to see his movies after Church on Sunday, not on the opening Friday/Saturday.

Edit: But I sincerely hope the estimates hold and a smart, funny film takes the #1 spot instead of the puerile crap that Perry flings against the cinematic wall.

Is an estimate 16.5M for the weekend considered a bomb? Sure, the reviews were terrible. But I expected this to make much less because of those said horrible reviews.

I love how the horrendous looking Proud American movie had the worst ever opening for a film EVER in wide releases. Only $180 PTA for the weekend.

Also curious to see how Burn after Reading holds up in the coming weeks.

^And Righteous Kill did anything but bomb. A $16+ million opening in September for an R-rated crime film starring two veteran actors is nothing to scoff at. It didnt set the world on fire or anything but it held its own this weekend and is not doing bad at all. Overture films paid $10 million for the domestic rights to this film. I'm willing to bet my own pretty penny they will see a nice profit.

I just watched the trailer. Poor Principal Belding, can't catch a break.

And who was the moron who decided it was a good idea to shoot that in 70mm?

What the hell is "Proud American"? Never even heard of it. Didn't know Tyler Perry had a new abortion (which seems to be the designated term) coming out until my Boss told me she was going to see it Friday and I had to stifle the "Who took a shit?" look that started to spread across my face.

Glad to see my low opinion of his "talent" (gimmick is probably the better word) is shared!

No, but at 67.4 million domestic, it was only the 25th highest grossing film of the year, which had to be considered a disappointment considering the two leads.

The 3-hour runtime definitely didn't help its B.O. take (same with Casino and Braveheart that same year).

Righteous Kill did better than I expected.
