Park Chan-wook's Thirst (Evil Live) -- TBA 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0762073/

Announced yesterday, Universal and Focus Features would be stepping in to offer additional funding for the Oldboy and Lady Vengeance director's vampire film. It stars Song Kang-ho of Memories of Murder and JSA fame, along with some other familiar Park faces.

Per Variety:

UPI, Focus 'Thirst' for vampire film
Studios to invest in, co-produce Park pic
By PATRICK FRATER

It's the first time a Korean film has received U.S. studio coin and a Stateside distribution commitment before its local release.

Universal and Focus will invest in and co-produce the pic, which has so far been steered by Korean major CJ Entertainment.

Focus will bow the film in North America with CJ handling the remaining international sales rights. CJ also will distribute the film in South Korea.

The deal was announced Thursday by UPI Studio prexy Christian Grass, Focus CEO James Schamus and CJ CEO Kim Joo-sung.

"Thirst" stars Song Kang-ho ("Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "The Host," "The Good the Bad and the Weird") and Shin Ha-kyun ("Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"). Involving unusually risqué elements, pic also stars Kim Ok-bi ("Dasepo Naughty Girls,") as leading lady.

Pic is about a priest who participates in a medical experiment to find a cure for a deadly disease with traumatic repercussions.

It is skedded to be completed in time for a festival bow in mid-2009.

" 'Thirst' is especially exciting for us, as it's the first time a major studio has co-produced with a South Korean entertainment company in this way," said Grass. "Park Chan-wook is one of the most talented and influential Korean directors working today. We're really pleased to be partnering with CJ on this production."

"First, this is a vote of confidence in CJ and director Park, but also having a film of this scale get the backing of a major studio in North America opens up an opportunity for all Korean films," said Katharine Kim, exec VP and head of international at CJ. "Second, it is important to us to have Universal and Focus' financial commitment while the film is in production."

Park is best known for "Old Boy," which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes in 2003 and 2005 hit "Lady Vengeance," both of which sold internationally after their domestic release.

The co-production is being overseen by Grass; Jason Resnick, senior VP and general manager of worldwide acquisitions for Universal Pictures; and CJ's Kim.

Re: Park Chan-wook's Thirst (Evil Live) -- TBA 2009

Twitch has some first pictures leaked.

I loved, well the Vengeance trilogy of course, but "I'm a Cyborg" I thought was fantastic, even if it seems alot of other people didn't.

Can't wait for this.

If it is indeed ready mid-2009, perhaps it will show up at the NY Film Festival this fall, since films of his have been selected in previous years.

Nope. Family name first, then generational name, then given name so it's
Park Chan-wook or Park Chan Wook. Asian cultures in general identify things/people by going from the general to the specific.

Re: Park Chan-wook's Thirst (Evil Live) -- TBA 2009

Korean director Park Chan-Wook, who is known for his vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance), is looking to release his new vampire thriller called "Thirst." But South Korea's Media Rating Board is giving him a bit of trouble by banning the film's teaser poster, which shows a priest-turned-vampire being strangled by a woman.

The country's rating board has become more strict about the depiction of sexuality these days and will not allow for a poster featuring a shot of a priest in a sexual context to be displayed freely. The production company behind the film is still planning to use the poster as key artwork for marketing outside Korea.

The above is the "revised" poster (for South Korea). This is the banned poster:

Really excited about this one. Looks like a return to form from Park after the terrible I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK. Also I'm excited to see him working with Song Kang-ho again who is probably my favorite Korean actor at the moment.

Re: Park Chan-wook's Thirst (Evil Live) -- TBA 2009

(From DVDManiacs.net)

THIRST, directed by award-winning auteur, Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) was recently awarded the Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival, THIRST is slated to release in select theaters July 31st.

A priest becomes a vampire…another man’s wife is coveted…a deadly seduction triggers murder. Thirst is the new film from director Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). Already a boxoffice smash in Korea, Thirst was honored with the Prix du Jury [Jury Prize] at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival.

Continuing his explorations of human existence in extreme circumstances, the director spins a tale that he conceived and then developed over several years with co-screenwriter Chung Seo-kyung. Sang-hyun (played by top Korean star Song Kang-ho, of The Host) is a priest who cherishes life; so much so, that he selflessly volunteers for a secret vaccine development project meant to eradicate a deadly virus. But the virus takes the priest, and a blood transfusion is urgently ordered up for him.

The blood he receives is infected, so Sang-hyun lives – but now exists as a vampire. Struggling with his newfound carnal desire for blood, Sang-hyun’s faith is further strained when a childhood friend’s wife, Tae-ju (Kim Ok-vin), comes to him asking for his help in escaping her life. Sang-hyun soon plunges into a world of sensual pleasures, finding himself on intimate terms with the Seven Deadly Sins.

Wow. Can't wait...happy to see Focus Features taking it for the States. But what are the chances we get a healthy amount of features on the DVD?

Re: Park Chan-wook's Thirst (Evil Live) -- TBA 2009

Went and watched it today and didn't really care for it... Great story line and had moments that I thought were great and said to myself "Ok now its on track" but there were just too many overly non-sensical parts that derailed the movie for me. Its too bad because I loved the Venegance Trilogy, JSA and Cut from the 3 Extremes.
