Sounds like Jarmusch is returning to his existential violent world that Ghost Dog and Dead Man had (and Mystery Train to an extent), which has me stoked. Murray, Hurt, and Bernal? Sold.

Isaac de Bankole (the Haitain ice cream man from Ghost Dog and French cabbie in Night on Earth) is playing the lead.

By the way, Jarmusch's hair is something of a milestone in the history of hairstyles. It's like if Lee Marvin was in a punk band.

From Film in Focus:

Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s new film, The Limits of Control, is the story of a mysterious loner (Isaach. De Bankolé), a stranger, whose activities remain meticulously outside the law. He is in the process of completing a job, yet he trusts no one, and his objectives are not initially divulged. The film is set in the striking and varied landscapes of contemporary Spain (both urban and otherwise). Joining Mr. De Bankolé in the cast for the writer/director are Hiam Abbass, Gael García Bernal, Paz De La Huerta, Alex Descas, John Hurt, Youki Kudoh, Bill Murray, Jean-François Stévenin, Tilda Swinton, and Luis Tosar. Co-financed by Focus with Entertainment Farm, The Limits of Control will be released in exclusive engagements on May 22nd.

Award-winning cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love) is the film's director of photography; Eugenio Caballero (Pan's Labryinth), is the film's production designer. The filmmaker's longtime collaborator Jay Rabinowitz will edit the feature. Jon Kilik (Babel) is executive-producing the film, continuing his association with Jarmusch.

Is that Richard Edson on the far left in the very last picture?

I get more of a Wim Menders or Hal Hartley vibe. Kinda like Dont Come Knocking meets Fay Grim. But I agree it looks damn interesting. I love me some Murray.

I'll see any Jim Jarmusch movie about an idiosyncratic black loner who happens to be a hitman.

But this is too good to pass up: the Jim Jarmusch movie The Limits of Control (trailer for which I posted late last night) will feature music from atmospheric doom lords Boris, Sunn O))) and Earth.

Many times before, I've sung Earth's praises in articles and message board posts, but they're still an unknown quantity for many. Which is too bad, as their current reverb-drenched moody Americana (with song titles taken from Cormac McCarthy) is great movie music. Similarly, Boris and Sunn O))) can make wildly atmospheric music, especially when they work together.

When I posted the trailer I wondered who might have been responsible for the music within. It took reader Bob Ham to point out that Boris is named in the credits; founding Sunn O))) member (and Boris collaborator) Stephen O'Malley confirms on his blog that the other bands are part of the package as well.

That said, the trailer music doesn't sound quite like any of those three bands. There's a vaguely Earth vibe, but I'm not certain it's them. Emails have been sent, but in the meantime if you can ID the tune(s) I'd love to know.

well this officially just became my most anticipated release of the year. i love all 3 of those bands.
