Bolt (Howard/Williams, 2008) — Disney's new 3D CG dog movie

Bolt | 21 November 2008

HD Trailer: 480P | 720P | 1080P

Synopsis: For super-dog BOLT (voice of JOHN TRAVOLTA), every day is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue - at least until the cameras stop rolling. When the star of a hit TV show is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he begins his biggest adventure yet - a cross-country journey through the real world to get back to his owner and co-star, Penny (voice of MILEY CYRUS). Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and the help of two unlikely traveling companions — a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens (voice of SUSIE ESSMAN) and a TV-obsessed hamster named Rhino (voice of MARK WALTON) — Bolt discovers he doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.

I have to say, after the atrocious-looking Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons, I'm finally excited to see a Disney Digital 3D title. I'm not too happy that once again they've hired "celebrities" instead of real voice actors, but I don't see that trend slowing down any time soon.

Maybe I'm crazy, I dunno, but I think this looks great. I love the concept, voice work, animation, and it looks so cute and funny. I could see this one doing quite a bit at the BO if the reviews hold up.

ive seen the trailer twice, once before Wall E (which was somewhat amusing, when Miley's name popped up, a few girls up front kind of yelled out 'oh hannah, and i kind of booed and did a 'shut up'. it was a latenight show, so no real issues) and before the Dark Knight, where it got little to no reaction.

I'm not sure about this one. The trailer didn't really make it seem like a must watch. Besides there hasn't been a non pixar disney movie that has been really good since Lilo & Stitch.

I bet that "TV-obsessed" hamster is chock full of hilarious pop culture references! I can't wait to see him make a MacGyver crack as he creates some wacky weapon to save Miley and the gang.

I thought it looked like fun. If they can stay away from what NoirFan is talking about, it should be pretty enjoyable.

WHY did I see this trailer before Dark Knight?!

I did, however, get in an imitation of the South Park John Travolta in during both that and WALL-E..."Ohmahgahd! Tom Cruise, I'm a talking dawg! Ohmahgahd!"

I like the hamster. Something about the way he looks makes me chuckle.

I think this will be a hit, a non-Pixaar Disney hit. It looks amazing in 3-D. Yes, I'm looking forward to it.

I smell a lawsuit coming. The three pigeons are similar to the animaniacs three pigeons. Even one of the voices sounded like one of them.

I couldn't agree more! I think this looks like a winner for sure. The trailer alone had me laughing the entire time. I just love the sarcasm. That hamster is also going to keep me entertained, I can tell!

A friend of mine thought the same thing when we saw WALL-E. He leaned over to me and said "It's the Goodfeathers!" and I started laughing. Good call.

Wow that's interesting. As a HUGE fan of Lilo & Stitch, I'm disappointed that Sanders didn't get to continue with the film and that Lasseter was responsible.

So, I saw this in RealD 3D, which was a treat, but at the heart of it all, the film is quite engaging in terms of fun and sympathetic characters in the form of primarily Bolt (dog), Mittens (cat), Rhino (hamster in a sphere), and Penny (Bolt's person). The film offers much enjoyment to both kids and adult audiences alike, which is a plus because many of us adult were laughing quite a bit. There's one short sequence that had tears running down my face from laughter, and I didn't even wipe them away for fear of missing out on the 3D-ness from taking off the RealD glasses. There a lot of exciting action at the start, and then Bolt's true journey gets underway, and for the most part, the friendships that arise are developed well, and gives a gentle tug at the heart strings as the film wraps up. The film is paced pretty well, as the story keeps moving with good momentum, while slowing down just enough to cultivate character development between the main cast.

I give this film 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+.

Mittens the cat is the scene stealer in this cartoon.
There are 2 great action scenes.
I liked the movie and but the 3-D effects were no big deal.

Saw this a few hours ago. My first digital movie in RealD 3D. I agree the 3D effects are not that impressive and therefore not worth the extra $2.50 per ticket. Okay, there appears to be more space between foreground and background objects, but that's it. Nothing looks like it's coming out of the screen and so close to you that you want to touch it. The film itself is just ok. The opening and ending is good, but the middle drags from lack of jokes. 2 out of 4 stars.
