I don't understand the hate for A Beautiful Mind. Thought it was a great movie. Really made you uncomfortable and think about how horrible it would be to find out your "ilfe" didn't really exist.
Voted Chicago because I couldn't wait for it to end. Really despised that movie except for Queen Latifah. Crash was a close second for me. It in no way deserved to be even nominated for best picture. I didn't hate it though. |

Crash is one of the few movies I've seen that's actively angered me while watching it. I hate that piece of shit film.
The only scene that had me shaking my head was when the rich black guy gets carjacked by the black thug. And the rich black guy like doesn't get mad, but is mad at the police. |

lol, that POS movie didn't sum up anything. Merely pointed out that the LOTR trilogy has... GASP!... Spoiler:

How about when Matt Dillon just so conveniently has to save the life of the woman he finger fucked just a few days earlier? You didn't find that coinicidence just a tad bit convenient and contrived? How about when Sandra Bullock has a life-changing epiphany simply because she slips and falls on her bony ass? |
Return of the king was just so awful. It turned them into superheroes who couldn't be killed, it went exactly where you thought it would and in the end it was just a cliche war movie. The book was soo much better. And Fellowship was at least original and had some depth. ROTK was just riding on fumes of the earlier films. And coincidences? Like lord of the rings didn't have some hum dingers on that front?
and what about the part where he says something like, "no man can defeat me!" and she takes off her helmet and yells "I AM NO MAN!" wow. give that movie an oscar. I mean I hated crash and it had better dialogue. And at least kevin smith doesn't give movies four fucking endings. |

The other thing I hated about return of the king was how much it stole from return of the jedi. That and that the big villian just turned out to be an angry spotlight. Gee, dont remember that part in the book, thanks jackson.

Are you always this wrong or are you simply making a special effort today? |
If I had to pick the BP winner from all of these years, ONLY by going with the Academy nominees, my list would look like:
1998 - The Thin Red Line 1999 - The Sixth Sense 2000 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2001 - Fellowship of the Rings 2002 - Gangs of New York 2003 - Return of the King 2004 - The Aviator 2005 - Munich 2006 - The Departed Haven't seen Atonement or There Will Be Blood yet, so can't vote for 2007. |
I voted Crash. Gladiator would be 2nd for me, I really hated it when it came out, but it has grown on me a little since then (decent background movie to have on for visuals).

I voted American Beauty because I can't stand the smug condescension, rank stereotypes masquerading as profound analysis and absurd overscripting of that movie. It may not be the worst movie I've ever seen from a technical perspective but it's simultaneously too pat and extremely hypocritical. It's a lefty European's fantasy of what suburban America is really all about, even though he's never been there and would never deign to talk to any actual suburbanites.
Guess what, you'll never believe this, that ex-military type with the Nazi fixation who was quite nasty to the nice gay couple is really a repressed homo! Amazing, huh? What a unique character twist! Also, the suburban wife/real estate agent is really a shallow, self-pitying, materialistic Republican capable of murder! I'm not joking! Also, that mild-mannered dad? He really wants to boff his daughter's friends and buy a Firebird! Outrageous, right? Lastly, the artsy son/drug dealer who likes videoing plastic bags and peeping the neighbors' chesty daughter is really the concience of the community and the only one with true humanity! Isn't that always the way? Does anyone have a rolleyes about ten feet in diameter? I guess what bothered me most is how many people bought into this bullshit. This is awesome. That movie had so much potential, and yet with morons at the helm directing and producing, came off so mind numbingly stupid it was nauseating. It would be a daunting task to take a movie with so much potential and make such a trite, predictable, idiotic film as that hack director managed to pull off. |

Yeah 'Road To Perdition' was excellent.
I was searching for a derogatory term and 'hack' fit the bill at the time. If he ever manages to make another movie of the 'Perdition' caliber he gets off the 'hack' list. |
I was tempted to vote "No Country for Old Men", just because I'm not much of a Coen Bros. fan and I believe "There Will Be Blood" is a masterpiece of the caliber of "2001" or "Citizen Kane".. but I haven't seen it, so I played fair.
I voted for "Crash" because it was a shitty afterschool special about how everybody is human no matter the color of their skin. What a revelation. When it was up against "Brokeback" AND "Munich", both excellent films, there's no excuse for that tripe to have won. "Chicago" would have been a close second for me only because it has no substance whatsoever, but at least it was more entertaining. I don't really get all the "Shakespeare in Love" hate. I'm sure there were better films out that year, but I found it very smart and entertaining. No one mistook it for history. While I like Spielberg, I think "SPR" was one of his worst films and I'm glad a better-written comedy managed to outweigh the "obligatory" war epic. First comedy win since "Annie Hall". And really, who knew "Saving Private Ryan" had so many fans? The first 20 minutes were virtuoso film making, but the rest was shoddy crap. Some well-made moments here and there, but as a whole it was a mess. [SPOILER WARNING] Not to mention the utter illogic of the film being Matt Damon's flashback of Tom Hank's experience which he wasn't there for.[END SPOILER] Then there's "American Beauty". While I agree with Hiro that it's full of stereotypes, I feel that unlike "Crash", it's actually a very entertaining and well-made film. It transcends its stereotypes with great writing and directing. The whole "LOTR" thing is outside of my realm. I saw them and enjoyed them, but frankly much of it went over my head. Never read the books and don't get all the hype around it. I think it works mainly for fans of the books, and special-effects fanboys. "Million Dollar Baby" was an ok movie, but shouldn't have won Best Picture when "The Aviator" was up there. "The Departed" was a good choice among the five and I was really happy to see Scorsese win. |
