Yeah, that one's rather bad because any one of the other nominees for 2005 would've been a better pick for Best Picture than Crash

But my pick for just a bit worse was Rocky beating All the President's Men, Bound for Glory, Network, and Taxi Driver. How that overrated little boxing movie beat two good movies along with two great films just gets more inscrutable as time goes on. (And if you haven't seen Rocky lately, let's just say it has not aged well at all.)

(As for Annie Hall beating Star Wars, I personally think both are great movies and just wish it had been the first tie for Best Picture ever.)

I thought about including that one, but I actually like Rocky, although I'm not going to argue against anyone who claims the others are better. (Certainly Taxi Driver and All the President's Men are better.) Crash, on the other hand, is such an abjectly, shockingly, offensively, hilariously, unbelievably shitty movie that it would have been an outrage even if the other nominees had been Deuce Bigalow 2, The Dukes of Hazzard, House of Wax, and Son of the Mask.

To be fair, 9 times out of ten, they have a point.

That's why I said it was a knee-jerk reaction - they automatically oppose a remake of a highly regarded film, even if it turns out to be one of the few remakes that is good.

(Another example is John Carpenter's remake of The Thing, which almost all critics hated at the time of its release mainly because it was a remake of a classic quasi-Howard Hawks genre film. It took a long time before the common view shifted on that one too.)
