Plus it has a killer (no pun intended) soundtrack, which is criminally unavailable on cd.

The Exorcist. It's still one of the only horror films that can give me the creeps to this day.
Close second is the phenomenal The French Connection, then To Live and Die in L.A. and Cruising.
I still need to see Sorcerer, but I'm waiting for the rumored anniversary edition DVD.

I just wonder how many people see the Exorcist The Version You Haven't Seen, or whatever it is called, as the definitive version. The yuk yuk tacked on ending ruins the whole picture IMHO.

More like "The Version You Wish You Haven't Seen". The distracting digital effects were straight out of the Lucas revisionist handbook, though the additional scene at the hospital clarifies some of Regan's behavior.

Ironically The Exorcist won the Academy Award for 'best sound'.

the yuk yuk tacked on ending is the way the book ends.
Also the scene with the woman (Lois Kintry)
who translates the tape of Reagan speaking backwards.
We find out in Legion (Exorcist III) that she was the mother of the first victim (Thomas Kintry).

One of my vivid memories of seeing it in the theater was getting there early and sitting in the lobby waiting. We could hear the exorcism scene booming through the walls. We were getting scared just hearing the sounds and yelling.

my dad has told me that when he went to see it, there were lines around the building waiting to see it, and its one of the few movies to legit scare him (he grew up catholic too, so that prob influenced it)

Re: Favorite William Friedkin Film?
I just watched Cruising again last night. Still packs a punch. I sure would have loved to have seen Friedkin's original extended cut.
Pacino makes some interesting acting choices in this and it's the quiet Pacino... before he became the bombastic Al of later films.
Oh and that soundtrack.

Sorcerer. I didn't think anything could live up to The Wages of Fear, but I think Friedkin's film matches it every step of the way while including it's own unique touches such as the terrific Tangerine Dream score, the bridge sequence and the ending. I can't believe that Friedkin wanted Steve McQueen to star in this. I certainly don't think I'd be able to buy him in the role, so I'm glad the part went to Scheider.
I'd rank my favorites as follows:
Sorcerer
Bug
Cruising
To Live and Die in L.A.
Rampage

^Nice to see Rampage getting some love. Where is the damn DVD/BD?
Totally agree with your assessment of Sorcerer. My 2nd favorite Friedkin film. Brilliant from start to finish.

Oh yeah, I'd say Rampage is easily his most underrated work. Perhaps it would get more respect if released in it's full version, though I think it's still a damn fine film in it's current incarnation. I used to have a VHS copy, but it has long since died.

Bug was good (besides the obvious Exorcist); but didn't vote for lack of exposure.

Time to bump this...
Also....Sorcerer, Cruising, Rampage, Bug and The Brink's Job need to be released on BD.
