Titanic (in my humble opinion!) was probably the last movie where people saw the movie multiple times in the theater pre-widespread DVD age (at the time the movie came on in late 1997, DVD players were still rare and quite expensive just like Blu-ray players are now).

With the price of Blu-ray players rapidly dropping (we'll see Profile 1.1 players probably drop under US$300 very soon), I expect Blu-Ray player sales to really pick up, especially with all those 40" and larger HDTV sets sold in the past few years with HDMI inputs.

Hasn't Woody Allen only had like 1 movie since Match Point? If so, that's not really saying much. I rather enjoyed that movie (and I'm sure Scarlett had a lot to do with that), so I might check this out. Truthfully though, I haven't seen any of Woody Allen's other work (even the "classics") outside of maybe Small Time Crooks, which I also found fairly humorous.

No, two. "Scoop" and "Cassandra's Dream". Both flops. And people thought "Match Point" was a fluke (Woody being "back"). But he rebounded beautifully with "Vicky Christina Barcelona". Both "Point" and "Vicky" have been well received by both the critics and the box-office.

You have the right idea but didn't really back up your point. While i find that both takes are impressive you cannot simply say one is more impressive than the other, especially that Titanics take is far more impressive.

First of all, your gonna find that Titanic sold more tickets... cheaper ticket prices=more tickets being sold of course. Thus when inflation comes around a decade later... omg lol 900 millionz... teh dark nightz cannot competez lol. Anybody that believes Titanic could've sold the same amount of tickets with a carbon copy economy of 08 in 97 (or 98?) is an idiot. While Dark knight higher prices=less tickets being sold...but nonetheless it hit 500 mil which is very impressive either way.

I can get technical i say use basic economics... substitute goods... dvds cheaper these days-high ticket prices people are more willing to wait for the dvd. Complimentary goods... concesstion stand munchies more expensive=people who wont watch movies without goodies. (You're also gonna get more sneaking in with food of course... but beef and chicken more expensive no?).

As you can see where im going with this all in all both are impressive, which is why i think going by the all-time chart is the most accurate, not some bullshit inflation.

If you compare the box office scores for both years, I don't really think saying Dark Knight had to fight a tougher economy/home video sales really holds much weight. Unless we really think Indiana Jones and Hancock are such terrific movies that they drove people to risk foreclosure. Like others, and you, have said, they are both impressive. The people trying to find a precise formula to prove that TDK is the best movie ever are trying too hard.

Mamma Mia! actually improved due to the Sing-A-Long versions that got shipped out to theaters, huge drop on Vicky Cristina Barcelona .

Batman broke $500m . Threepeat for Tropic Thunder It may actually make it a Fourpeat and next weekend could be an alltime low weekend.

TDK contines to amaze. Not only passing $500 million, but a movie dropping only 17% in weekend #7 just doesn't happen anymore. Traitor also did pretty well at #5. I haven't seen a single preview for that.

The Dark Knight should watch out, Vicky Christina Barcelona might be it's next contender for $500 mil.

Scoop was not a flop. We aren't exactly sure its budget - IMDB says 4 (if so it did excellent in the US) or it could have been the usually 15 that Woody uses (it was just under that total in the US), but it did well in foreign markets and wonderfully on video.

Excellent for VCB it deserves it.

RichC2, how much would VCB have to make to be considered "amazing". I think it is doing beyond amazing compared to some of the other trash that is in 2500-3000 theaters and makes just a little more than what VCB made in its first weekend in only 692 theatres.

IMO, My Big Fat Greek Wedding numbers would be necessary to be considered "amazing". Term is sort of reserved for movies that buck trends (that one started in limited release, in its 17th week it had $45m and was in about 700 theaters, it expanded, peaked at around 1600 theaters and $11m in 1 weekend, and somehow tapped out at $241m US in 52 weeks)

That said, VCB is doing very well for itself.

I know most of Woody's movies usually make under 10M. But I meant compared to "Match Point", where he rebounded and everyone thought he was back, "Scoop" made 10M (39M worldwide) and 38% on RT. "Match Point" made 23M (85M worldwide) and 77% on RT.

I might have been hoping for too much. I LOVED the trailer, have been listening to 'Rock Me Sexy Jesus' for weeks and was expecting to love the movie...so when it unspooled and was brutally unfunny (ie. it was an Andrew Flemming - circa NOW - movie), I was pretty damn disappointed.

i can understand that. i watched the trailer on apple.com last night and decided it looked amazing - had never heard of it before yesterday surprisingly. went with a group of friends. out of all 4 of us, only 1 disliked the film.

this movie made me feel so good and brought back the days of jawbreaker, saved!, heathers, romy & michele's high school reunion, and other similar films... i just loved it so much and i know i will be quoting it for years. im really sorry you couldnt enjoy it as much as i did

I'm honestly scared to see Hamlet 2.

It's such a great premise with such an uncreative director at the helm. In one side, you have someone who has been Trey Parker and Matt Stone's creative partner and the creator of one of the most underrated sitcoms of the decade (The Loop). However, on the opposite side, we have the man who brought us winners like Nancy Drew and The In-Laws.

But I'm happy that Disaster Movie tanked.
