Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee, 2009)

There is a thread on this in the Adult Forum of all places, but nothing in the Movie Forum. Here is the link to that thread. For those who don't want to or cannot browse that site, I figured I'd make a new discussion thread here. I'm a bit leery of the casting, with a sometime Daily Show contributor in the lead and Eugene Levy as Max Yasgur, but who knows. IMDB

From Coming Soon:
Focus Features will begin production late this month on Taking Woodstock, written by James Schamus and to be directed by Ang Lee.

The film is an adaptation of the memoir of Elliot Tiber, who played a role in helping the historic 1969 music fest unfold on his neighbor's farm.

Demetri Martin ("The Daily Show with Jon Stewart") had already been set to play Tiber, an aspiring interior designer in Greenwich Village obliged to run the family business, a Catskills motel. In summer 1969, he found himself at the center of a generation-defining experience when he volunteered the motel to be the home base for Woodstock concert organizers after his neighbor, Max Yasgur, made his farm available for the event.

Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman will play Tiber's parents, and Jonathan Groff will play Woodstock organizer Michael Lang; Emile Hirsch will play a recently returned Vietnam vet, Eugene Levy will play Yasgur, and Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is in talks to play a transvestite named Vilma.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) is set as a closeted married man having an affair with Tiber, while Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan play a hippie couple attending the concert. Dan Fogler will play a local theater troupe head, and Mamie Gummer will play Lang's assistant.
Rolling Stone interview with producer James Schamus.

Based on that description, I wouldn't have greenlighted it.

This description doesn't exactly set my world on fire or anything, but I definitely will check out any Ang Lee film.

And Liev Schreiber is going the drag route again!

....looks like Ang Lee is reverting back to the boringness of stories like "Ride With The Devil".

Ang Lee's involvement is really the only thing this movie has going for me.

Ang Lee directing a screenplay by James Schamus starring Demetri Martin, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Emile Hirsch, Liev Schreiber, Paul Dano, and Eugene Levy? I'm sold just based off the cast and crew alone.

Re: Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee, 2009)

Poster looks like kinda generic...It's a good poster I guess but...I've seen way too many "groovy" like posters for films like this this.

Re: Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee, 2009)

Given that I'll be done taking my course on 1960's pop/rock music once this comes out, I'll definitely see this. Great cast (Schreiber as a dragqueen! Eugene Levy! The Comedian!!).

You say Eugene Levy like it's a good thing.

Re: Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee, 2009)

Variety review:
Gentle, genial and about as memorable as a mild reefer high, "Taking Woodstock" takes a back-door approach to revisit the landmark musical weekend through the antics and efforts of some of the people who made it happen. A sort of let's-put-on-a-show summer-camp lark for director Ang Lee after the dramatic rigors of "Brokeback Mountain" and "Lust, Caution," the picture serves up intermittent pleasures but is too raggedy and laid-back for its own good, its images evaporating nearly as soon as they hit the screen.

Re: Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee, 2009)

I'll be seeing this Friday night in Kansas City at the AMC Mainstreet. First time for me in KC and first time in a theater that lets you order food and eat at your seat. Should be fun!

I won't be able to give my thoughts until Sunday when I fly back.

I have tickets to a screening tonight. The show here is also in a premium theater that serves food and alcohol. I'll try to post some impressions tomorrow.

Re: Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee, 2009)

Since no one I know is at all interested in going-they want to see Halloween II-I may just take myself tomorrow afternoon or Saturday PM. The pics of Liev Schreiber in drag definitely fly in the face of his most recent roles. The things Ang Lee can get grown men to do.
