Favorite Altman film?

M*A*S*H*
Brewster McCloud
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
The Long Goodbye
Nashville
Popeye
The Player
Short Cuts
Gosford Park

Other - please specify

Quite a few worthwhile films I didn't have room to include - 3 Women, Images, California Split, A Wedding, Secret Honor, Thieves Like Us, etc.

My vote went to Nashville - a sprawling, ambitious near masterpiece that qualifies as one of the key films of the 1970s. Hopefully we'll get Brewster McCloud, H.E.A.L.T.H., That Cold Day in the Park and Jimmy Dean on dvd someday. If someone has seen fit to issue O.C. and Stiggs, than surely his other films deserve a release as well.

Mash.

3 Women followed by McCabe & Mrs. Miller and Nashville

Tarantino 08-24-08 08:37 PM

It appears that I've never seen a Robert Altman film.

Short Cuts

M*A*S*H (followed by short cuts)

So many great films, it's difficult to choose my favorite. Depending on the day, it could be Short Cuts, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, or The Long Goodbye.

BlueCC 08-24-08 09:05 PM

I would watch Popeye before any of the other choices. I watched it every time it was on television in the 90's.

JOE29 08-24-08 09:44 PM

M*A*S*H was a good movie that spawned one of the best ever tv series.
That's my pick.

Popeye!

wendersfan 08-24-08 10:25 PM

I can't decide between The Long Goodbye, Nashville, or McCabe and Mrs Miller. :(

RobCA 08-24-08 10:31 PM

Popeye wins by default, the only other Altman film I've seen is The Player...

I think anyone would agree 'McCabe & Mrs. Miller' is his best work.

It's also my favorite.

'The Long Goodbye' would be second.

movielib 08-25-08 08:08 AM

Nashville by a mile. One of my favorite films of all time.

The Player second.

Three Women

Charlie Goose 08-25-08 08:30 AM

Definitely MASH.

The worst on that list is Popeye. What an piece of crap that was. Even watching it as a kid I knew it was terrible.

Cosmic Bus 08-25-08 08:53 AM

I may be the only person who'll ever claim this, but I absolutely adore Quintet. Very fond of 3 Women and the Long Goodbye, too.

rexinnih 08-25-08 09:17 AM

Lots of greats but MASH at #1 for me.

superdeluxe 08-25-08 10:40 AM

I really liked Short Cuts

pjflyer 08-25-08 11:31 AM

Short Cuts
Player
California Split
Long Goodbye
McCabe
Mash
Nashville

fumanstan 08-25-08 11:43 AM

Popeye wins by default since i've only seen that and Gosford Park, and I thought Gosford Park was terrible.

MoviePage 08-25-08 01:58 PM

3 Women

Josh-da-man 08-25-08 02:08 PM

"Ready to Wear" pretty much sucks, but the end is great. :)

Zen Peckinpah 08-25-08 03:47 PM

The Long Goodbye, no question, followed closely by the trifecta of MASH, Short Cuts, and California Split.

Norm de Plume 08-25-08 04:43 PM

I am by no means an Altman completist, but Images is a near-masterpiece of unnerving psychological suspense.
