Even though we shouldn't, we all do it. If someone says they don't like a particular movie, we automatically look down upon them as if they are stupid buttholes. Some of mine are:

Pulp Fiction: Pretty obvious. Look at my name.

Observe and Report: This doesn't come up in conversation a lot but it is damn funny. Seth Rogen's best role to date.

The Cabin in the Woods looks like a recent addition for me. So, what are some of yours?

I'm usually pretty openminded about others' likes/dislikes - but if you don't like (or at least appreciate) JAWS and THE GODFATHER, we'll have words.

Not specific movies - I'm not that petty.

I do tend to think a little less of someone if they're mostly into just one type of movie; whether it's mostly action movies or mostly art-films or whatever, it shows a lack of diversity in their character.

Same thing with music and only listening to one type.

This also. Why would you limit yourself to one genre? There are great movies in every genre.

P.S.-I am that petty.

Not so much what people say they don't like, as what they do like.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

Those who hate "Main Stream" movies because they love the "Art House/Indie" movies, everyone else is stupid because they do not fall down and worship "Art House/Indie" movies.

People can like whatever they want to, all the power to them. But, I can't those who look down on others for their personal choices. I have run into tons of these movie snobs over the years, can't hear any words coming out of their mouths once they put others down for being a "Joe Six Pack" dumb movie watching person.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

There are those who like "movies" like 'The Fast and the Furious'. I expect these same "people" to appreciate the "art" of Thomas Kinkade.

Sure, they can like what they want but it doesn't take away from the fact they have terrible taste and probably have no clue what film can be since they only watch the shit that is put in front of them.

If you're a fan of Adam Sandler comedies I tend to look down at you. Anybody who quotes Billy Madison is likely to get punched in the face!

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

If someone tells me they like Serenity, anything by Sam Raimi, or Monty Python movies, I immediately know they're someone I need to friend.

If they say they liked Bad Boys 2, Double Jeopardy, or any Nicholas Sparks based movie, I tend to think less of them, unless the Sparks' movie is The Notebook, which wasn't that bad.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

I don't judge people by the movies they like or dislike. I do, on the other hand, judge people for judging other people by the movies they like or dislike.

But if we're talking probabilities, there's a 99.9% certainty that if you can't laugh your ass off while watching BLAZING SADDLES, we won't get along on any level.

See, I could have a field day with just this. BB2, while not a "good" movie in the traditional sense of the word, is a highly enjoyable one; if you can't enjoy it, for reasons that I won't go into here (see Hot Fuzz), then fun movies aren't for you. And The Notebook was just that bad, quite dreadful, actually.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

I've known a few women that only like to watch romantic comedy's. So if I find out a woman generally only likes those type of movies, I become more negative towards them.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

I can't even fathom judging someone by the movies they like and dislike. That sounds irrational and crazy to me.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

If they like crappy movies, I don't judge them, I just don't heed their movie recommendations.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

I don't judge based on movies people like, but among friends I do appreciate a degree open-mindedness to seeing new movies. For example if I recommend a Kurosawa movie to someone I hope they don't run away because of subtitles.

However if someone's interests say something like "Black and White movies" I am left scratching my head. That isn't restrictive to any genre, era, whatever. I can infer that maybe the person is trying to say they like movies from the 40's and 50's, but to phrase it as such is just a bit weird. Okay so you don't watch 'modern' things as much. But I'm also guessing you don't watch Vitaphone shorts back to back in your spare time either.

And on the opposite side of that I have one friend who says he doesn't like most movies made before 1990 and I am....pretty puzzled/disappointed by that statement. Although he has made a few exceptions...and in fact he wants to see something this week. I dunno what we'll pick.

Definition of a movie snob comment. I hate comments like this.

Re: What movies do you judge people by?

Anyone who considers any of the "Transformers" movies to be one of the best movies of its year needs his head examined.
