As all prospects of TDK beating Titanic's unadjusted gross fade (I'm just pulling for it to break $500m as Titanic was always out of reach), Brendan Fraser proves he is somehow still one of the biggest box office stars in the US by having not one but two hits in the top 10 this weekend. These are "early" estimates and as the day goes on they should officiate a bit more, I expect TDK to go up a little and Mummy to be down a little.

Swing Vote generated little interest and bombed as predicted (though a lot goes into defining what a bomb really is these days.)

Poor Costner. The man just can't get a hit film it seems...
On the other hand I think Fraser sold his soul to Satan to get the grosses up on his films. Mummy III was expected tot be big of course (and looks like it'll be the lowest grossing of the trilogy) but Journey to the Center of the Earth I thought for sure would bomb.
X-files also held up a smidge better than what I thought.

So you think he was playing himself in the Bedazzled remake?

It would have bombed if it weren't in 3d. Everyone I know who saw it in 3d loved it, but said it would have been terrible as just a movie.

^Totally agree....had a great time but while I was watching it i kept thinking 'If I was watching this at a non 3D theatre, I'd be fucking pissed off'...but as it was, I liked it because the 3D was cool and it moved at a good pace.

Costner has taken a beating the last few years...first Mr. Brooks tanks and now Swing Vote...poor bastard.

Also of interesting note that after this weekend Dark Knight will have entered the top 10 highest domestic grossing films. It should be sitting at position no. 8 by the end of sunday. It'll be interesting to see if it can top Star Wars which sits at the no. 2 position with $460 million.

Also interesting is the race between Iron Man and Indy 4 which by the end of the weekend these films should be within 1 million dollars of each other. It sure is gonna be a close one with those two.

How does Costner still get work? It seems whatever he is in flops. He hasn't had a real hit since Bodyguard or Robin Hood (not sure which came out last). Is he still coasting on Dances With Wolves' fame? I know if I was a Hollywood producter/director, I wouldn't hire him.

Open Range was a moderate hit (and a great movie).

The Guardian was surprisingly good, but I thought the promotion campaign for the movie kind of sucked.

He's just made bad choices with some of his other movies. (Although I thought he was particularly good as the bad guy in 3000 Miles to Graceland - and seeing as how a lot of people love to hate the guy, maybe he should play more villains...)

Costner self produced this film with his own money.

I sincerely hope the truly awful word of mouth will sink the Mummy's box office for the rest of the weekend. TDK should be ousted from the top spot by Pineapple Express or Tropic Thunder.

Frasier's movies do well in spite of him not because... In fact, we were going to go see Journey to the Center of the Earth today in 3D just because it looked fun, but after watching the M3 last night, I couldn't stand to watch him stumble through another movie, so we went to see TDK again.

Yeah, PE opens on a Wednesday, so it's possible TDK will be #1 for the 3-day weekend... The week after however it'll be knocked off the top spot since it'll be in the low/mid teens range by then.

I'm one of the few who caught Swing Vote...and it's not a bad movie. It starts out horribly corny and unfunny, but by the end it turns into a nice little Capraesque commentary on our political system.

Cosnter's hasn't put out a GREAT movie in a while, but he still does good work...but the critics just love to bash the guy for some reason.

I thought the same thing. By no means a blockbuster which he hasn't had in eons but I liked it.

That's an interesting perspective. My wife and I saw it last night, an we enjoyed the corn much more than the ham-handed "commentary" (which was far more over-the-top than anything I've ever seen from Capra, but that's the subject of another discussion, I suppose ). I found almost all of the dramatic elements of the movie ridiculously contrived, and therefore completely unbelievable.

The reason being his politics, he's a republican. They bash Mel Gibson now because of THE PASSION. Critics are liberal.

Looks like The Dark Knight will overtake The Mummy 3 this weekend:

SUNDAY AM: Very early Sunday numbers show (pre-sale tix) that Warner Bros' The Dark Knight is laying claim to be the No. 1 movie in North America for the 3rd weekend in a row. Studio sources tell me that the Batman mega-blockbuster's Friday, Saturday and estimated Sunday take of $43M-$44M bested the $40M-$41M opening weekend of Universal's The Mummy 3: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor which had finished first on Friday but flattened on Saturday. The Brendan Fraser actioner ran well behind its hoped-for $50M -- but did well overseas. Whereas Dark Knight's gross on Saturday went up 37% from Friday and down only 35% from a week ago (looks like a 40% drop overall).

Looks like that will leave it $5 or 6 million short of $400 million total domestic gross. It should break $400 on Monday then after 18 days of release.

No it doesn't.

Are you referring to Titanic's $600 million gross using 1997 dollars, or the $900 million gross using the same 2008 dollars that The Dark Knight is earning?

It really doesn't. Even though the drops are somewhat small, the movie has got $200 million to go, three weeks after release. At a certain point, the summer season is going to end, a lot of people are going to go back to school, and the drops will catch up. Would I love for it become the #1 movie of all time. Absolutely. But I just don't think it's possible. $500 million is very likely, though.

That can't be true, liberal critics bashed the movie.
