If you could sit down and discuss films with anyone...Robert Osborne for me

Who would it be? For me (and maybe this is because I'm an old fart), it'd be Robert Osborne. I love old films, and whenever I've seen him interviewed, he just seems to be REALLY knowledgeable and a great conversationalist. But I'd have to say Terry Gilliam would be a close second. TG just has an infectious laugh, where you know it'd be fun to just hang with him.

Quentin Tarantino for his knowledge of grindhouse, exploitation and B-films.

Martin Scorsese for everything else.

Assuming some sort of universal translation device, either Claude Chabrol or Jean-Luc Godard, except Godard would condescend to me since I'm an American. If I'm restricted to people with whom I can actually converse with, it would be Robin Wood, someone with whom I've actually spoken about film, albeit briefly, and on the phone.

Scorsese's understandable love of postwar Italian cinema, and of American musicals, would mean I would probably get annoyed and not have a good time.

Roger Ebert - I think I would at least be able to keep up, itellectually with him. Anyone else would no doubt make me feel like I was in over my head. Of course nowadays I'd be doing most of the talking

But I certainly wouldn't turn down an opportunity to talk with Scorsese.

Roger for me too, although as you noted, this would be a text conversation.

Peter Bogdanovich. A fine personal career as a director and an even more impressive career as a lover of films and filmmakers.

Martin Scorsese

He likes the same things I do, but he's got a hell of a lot more insight, and he could clue me in to a lot of movies that I should watch (and would really enjoy).

And I love most of his movies, so it's a win/win. They guy is a movie fanatic, one well educated in film history.

I like Peter Greenaway's films but in person he's a bit overbearing.

Hitchcock

I'd love to hear his take on CGI and stuff; hear what kind of stuff he would like to do with it. Pretty interesting, if you ask me.

Yeah where is gutwretcher? He was the only one who listed the same titles as me in the "what dvds are you getting this week?" threads.

I believe he took an extended vacation and canoed 'into the wild' - he was a lover of the great outdoors. (as well as nunsploitation films)

I've met him and he's a really sweet person. His English is good enough you wouldn't even need a translator (he studied at Art Institute of Chicago for a while).

I've had the opportunity to talk about film with Guy Maddin, and I would love to do so again, preferably with a lot of booze at hand and a hockey game on the TV!

Good ones mentioned so far.

Paul Thomas Anderson - seems like a pretty knowledgeable guy and appreciation for classic movies.

What would you talk about, exactly? I'd love to talk film, life, or anything under the sun with the late Sam Fuller.

Seriously it would be PTA, Spielberg, Tarantino or Craig Brewer.... however I'd like to sit down and discuss films with some hacks like Paul W.S. Anderson, Peter Segal, Rob Cohen, Shawn Levy to try and show them what they are doing wrong and hopefully teach them the tools and techniques needed to make much better movies.
