Any thoughts as to why they did this?

Was it to build a fever of excitement as positive word-of-mouth grew? This seems unlikely since analysts were caught off guard by just HOW well-received and financially successful it has become.

I would not put it past Warner Brothers to delay the film's opening in certain overseas countries that provide quality bootlegs once it shows in those countries. WB went to a lot of trouble (delivering the film the day before release in most areas, when the norm is to deliver film a few days ahead so the theaters have time to splice the films together on their usual schedule, which gives time for bootleggers to do their thing) to keep the bootleggers at bay for the first 3 days of release to maximize theater receipts, as they also had no idea how well TDK would do in the theaters.

Makes sense. My buddy was in Peru a couple weeks ago. He's been there a few times before and reported that there is a BOOMING bootleg business down there. He made it known that if we compiled a list, he'd most likely be able to get us anything for a dollar a disc.

I didn't ask for anything as I try not to support bootlegging (besides, my 18 leather DVD cases looks so much better with the cover artwork :D ), but I was curious when he got back if he had found the Dark Knight and he said that seemed to be the one disc no one had. I guess Warner's plan paid off?

Some of those drops are a little much. I'm thinking TDK -37% and Mamma Mia -32%. Pineapple Express might be in line, though. Also, I'm not sure if Mirrors is going to open at $10m...

Didn't know if anyone saw this on Comingsoon.net

Counting inflation, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight has now officially surpassed Spider-Man to become the biggest comic book movie of all time. The Christopher Nolan sequel has reached $492.689 million domestically while Spider-Man hit a total of $491.952 when you look at the inflated number ($403.7 million without inflation).

Looking at the worldwide numbers, Variety says The Dark Knight will reach $900 million this weekend:

Crossing the $400 million milestone will place "The Dark Knight" in a club with only 29 other films. What's equally impressive about the sixth Batpic is that it's first in the series to generate a blockbuster number outside the U.S. "Batman Begins" generated the previous high number with a relatively modest $166 million.

The U.K. has led the way for "Dark Knight" with $86 million, followed by Australia with $40 million, Mexico with $25 million, Brazil with $19 million and South Korea with $18.6 million. With Germany in its second weekend and France in its third, and worldwide grosses going past $900 million this weekend, the Batpic may have enough firepower to become only the fourth film to hit $1 billion in combined foreign and domestic box office (after "Titanic," the third "The Lord of the Rings" and the second "Pirates of Caribbean").

And did you participate in the viral marketing campaign for the movie that was created by 42 Entertainment? If so, you'll enjoy this interview with the company's CEO Susan Bonds and CCO Alex Lieu.

Looks like it might hit $1 billion worldwide

Impressive.

Most impressive.

Glad to see it doing so well, even though it's been a flop in Japan. Apparently they don't like their superheroes dark and brooding. Pretty much amazing that it will be only the 2nd film ever to cross $500m, which it should do by the end of this weekend.

There's an interesting article on Dark Horizons about how the movie isn't doing well in Japan. They don't seem to like dark comic book movies.

^ Good thing you read the post above you, buddy... ;)

wearetheborg 09-02-08 08:22 PM

Sweet, TDK is now the highest domestic grossing movie for this decade, inflation adjusted.
It just overtook Shrek2.
