Best of these Boxing Movies

Which one of these boxing movies do you consider the best?

Not sure yet. It's a toss up between Rocky and Raging Bull for me. Raging Bull is better made, but Rocky is more "fun". As of now I can't choose.

Those were my 2 choices as well. I liked MDB a lot, but it didn't seem to hit the level of those 2.

I was rather impressed with the cinematography and the actual boxing in Cinderella Man. Cutting to the radio broadcast with his wife made it more suspenseful, too.

Mondo Kane 07-27-08 02:25 AM

Well...I liked the Rocky characters more, but Raging Bull is where it's at if you appreciate film school.

Shannon Nutt 07-27-08 09:37 AM

See, I don't consider Million Dollar Baby a "boxing movie". It's more like a story that takes place in the world of boxing, if that makes any sense.

I voted for Rocky, although Raging Bull is probably the better made picture...Rocky's just more re-watchable for me.

Arpeggi 07-27-08 09:45 AM

Whoever voted for Million Dollar Baby should have been aborted.

EdTheRipper 07-27-08 12:41 PM

Rocky

I don't consider Raging Bull to be a boxing movie. It's a drama about a boxer. The same is true of Rocky (and arguably Rocky II)

Now, Rocky III - THERE'S a "Boxing Movie," as opposed to a drama that just happens to be about a boxer. It's all about boxing. Rocky and Rocky II (and Rocky Balboa) are more about his life outside of boxing. The same is true of Raging Bull.

So I don't know if I'd say that Raging Bull OR Rocky are great boxing movies, because the boxing is almost secondary.

They're great movies, though, no question about that.

All good, then go rent "When We Were Kings"

 Great movie! I'm glad it's not constantly on television like Shawshank since I think I would stop whatever I was doing to watch it. Even though everyone knows the outcome, the interview where George Plimpton (?) details Ali's speech immediately leading up to the fight is mesmerizing.

I see no Gladiator  :)

Seriously. I am soooo tired of Clint Eastwood and his mediocre movies. I know Hollywood (and much of America) loves him, but I wish he'd retire or give his resources over to someone who knows how to make good movies.

Actually, none of the others are in the same class level as Raging Bull, but then yer talkin' Scorsese....

JumpCutz 07-27-08 09:22 PM

I voted for Raging Bull, but think very highly of the original Rocky(the only one in the series I like).
Although more a bio-pic, I think Michael Mann's ALI is severely underrated and contains some amazing boxing sequences.

Zen Peckinpah 07-27-08 09:42 PM

None of those have Mr. T.

Rocky III has Mr. T...and Hulk Hogan.

Rockmjd23 07-27-08 11:33 PM

1. Raging Bull
2. Rocky
3. Cinderella Man

Letters From Iwo Jima was pretty darned good. Actually, I'd argue that it's a great movie, but you don't have to agree with that. But at the very least you have to admit it's a good movie.

Honestly, I had never seen Raging Bull until the DVD release a year or two ago, and I thought it was good, but not great. A bit overrated since it has gotten so much praise since it came out. Don't get me wrong, because like I said I thought it was good, but not as good as many people make it out to be.

The four listed are all excellent choices, however the one I truly enjoy is the TV version of "Requiem for a Heavyweight". That one always tugs at the heart strings. That is not to say Million Dollar Baby and Rocky don't, it is just a different kind of pull.

But for technical achievements, Raging Bull wins.

Charlie Goose 07-28-08 09:23 AM

Rocky is terrific
Raging Bull is okay
Cinderella Man is mediocre
Million Dollar Baby is not good

Matthew Ackerly 07-28-08 10:53 AM

Where's Fat City?

islandclaws 07-28-08 11:06 AM

Raging Bull. Best boxing/De Niro/Scorsese film.

SoSpacey 07-28-08 12:30 PM

What about The Champ? :)
