Vin Diesel has done exactly TWO (2) movies that haven't been complete, unmitigated turdburgers. One he just provided a voice, the other he was killed off in the first half hour. He's simply not a sustainable lead.

Goat3001 08-27-08 10:52 AM

^What about Pitch Black and Boiler Room? It's fair to hate both of them but both movies were pretty well recieved by critics and the public.

I don't like nor dislike Vin Diesel. I won't skip a movie just because he's in it but at the same time I won't run to the theatres to see him. The plot of Babylon AD sounded like it could have been awesome like Blade Runner and The Fifth Element but it looks and sounds like they fucked it up. Oh well, maybe I'll netflix it when it hits DVD in 2 months.

chris_sc77 08-27-08 11:07 AM

I (I mean He) was also good in Find Me Guilty.

I thought both movies were fucking awful, but that's my opinion of course.

As far as being well received by the critics and public:

PITCH BLACK
- 54% Rotten Tomatoes
- Worldwide Box-office: $53 million

BOILER ROOM
- 65% Rotten Tomatoes
- Worldwide Box-office: $28 million

Crappy box-office, mediocre ratings... as I said, Vin Diesel simply isn't a sustainable lead. He lacks range as an actor, and his films are perceived as pretty crappy. His only two action hits (xXx and Fast/Furious) were years ago, and let's face it: hitching your wagon to the Rob Cohen Train of Craptaculosis is the quickest and easiest way of cheapening your brand.

Doing the Disney/family thing is probably the best thing for him now, I'd imagine. PACIFIER made bank, as did The Rock's GAME PLAN for the exact same reason. Self-lampooning of an already cartoonish figure may seem like a redundant strategy, but it generally brings in the shekels. Plus Jeff doesn't like Jews anymore.

He was good in Saving Private Ryan but granted his 1 character of out of the group. He did well in it for sure.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you or RottenTomatoes for that matter. I just haven't met anyone that saw and disliked Boiler Room (although its hard to consider that a Vin Diesel movie anyway). And I know maybe 3 people that saw Pitch Black and they thought it was above average as well.

That is why I thought they were generally well recieved movies. Box office aside as I think Boiler Room found an audience on DVD.

I also liked Find Me Guilty and thought Diesel was good in that.

Of course, thats just my opinion.

Shilex 08-27-08 01:18 PM

I thought Pitch Black was great and Chronicles of Riddick was entertaining. I can't believe Pitch Black got such a low tomato score.

paradicelost 08-28-08 05:49 PM

unless this includes "bang goes the bells" i'm not going to even netflix it.

Because tomato cannot tell the difference between their ass and their elbow.

Pitch black is awesome, Riddick is even better.

You can see like 15 preview clips of the movie here:

I am forced to go see this today as my wife is a HUGE Vin Diesel fan. I hope that it isn't as bad as I'm expecting....I also hope my wife is going to pay for my ticket.

Miktal 08-29-08 04:04 PM

This looks like garbage.
Looks are not deceiving. It is total and utter pants.

chris_sc77 08-29-08 07:51 PM

This is now at 6% favorable reviews at Rotten Tomatoes with a count of 36 reviews. The only two positive reviews are from the UK.

toddly6666 08-29-08 08:15 PM

Mathieu Kassovitz is a cry-baby bitch - always pointing fingers for the failure of his films. boo hoo hoo. He's a one-hit wonder (La Haine), and he should just stick with acting. They should release the Director's Cut DVD at the same time of this so-called disowned piece of garbage theatrical cut...

Seantn 08-29-08 08:21 PM

When has he pointed fingers in the past? I'm not familiar with his work, so I am curious to hear what he's said about his past films.

Artman 08-30-08 02:12 AM

I'm curious to see this if only for the Vin Diesel factor... Is he ripped in this film?

The dvd of Pitch Black has been a great best seller for years, Pitch Black like Blade Runner found it's audience on home video or dvd.

You know dvds actually are a studios best secret income, they are said to generate 60% of a studio's income.

Box office isn't the end of a movie's financial run.

The trailer for Fast and Furious looks great, original cast back next year

I think Diesel has been unlucky, the director and studio conflicted so much on this film, it's not the first time, this reminds me of Sean Connery in the League of Extradinary gentlemen, we know how that production went.

Not many actors are getting huge hits unless their in a comic book type film these days, you gotta admire Diesel for having a fanbase for his Dom Teretto character from Fast and Furious films and Riddick-which directors cut dvd sold impressive figures, Diesel just needs to be more careful the studio he works for, I personally wouldn't of released Riddick against Spiderman 2 in the summer of 2004, it's a fall character, dark, look at the freedom Stallone got working with Lionsgate on Rambo, great action flick, now if Diesel can do R rated riddick films with Liongate, while pleasing his fast and furious audience at universel, he's got it made, and I hear they wanna use a independent studio for riddick, go modest budget, Pitch Black cost 23 million to make, and if you take everything into account, the film has made huge money, the Riddick game was huge, the only thing Riddick fanchise got wrong was going up against Spiderman 2, the character can work on half the budget that 2nd riddick film did, it still opened on a 23 million weekend, not too shabby for a non-comic book character.

I'm a Riddick and Dom Terretto fan, it's like Stallone has Rocky and Rambo, and Diesel has Riddick and Teretto, 2 characters.
Besides all other action stars are pretty much gone, Stallone had a come back, Willis rarely does action anymore. Diesel has made some wrong choices, but he has fans who put up with it waiting for something better, a return to fast and furious next year is a good start.

It's easy to kick him down now like some critics are doing, but it would be fairer to understand what went wrong on the film between Fox and the director, as that's a bigger story, the action genre has always been underatted, even alot of Stallone's top action films, underatted, critics just don't get why people will watch films for action, even if the film has been comprimised, i'm a action junkie, and I'll watch it for action.

Diesel will be back.

FantasticVSDoom 08-31-08 02:57 PM

I don't think its so much Diesel's fault but he needs to be a bit more selective with his movie selections (as does Jason Statham). This was a bad movie, but because of the script, not Diesel. I thought he did an ok job with the terribleness (is this even a word?) of this movie.

I agree, I love Riddick and Pitch Black, even though this got terrible reviews, the trailer still looks pretty good, gonna check it out this week

PopcornTreeCt 09-01-08 10:02 PM

Interesting article...

http://blogs.amctv.com/scifi-scanner...-kassovitz.php

If Kassovitz hated it so much he should've taken his name off it.
