John Ford's calvery trilogy:

1) Fort Apache
2) She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
3) Rio Grande

NoirFan 07-16-08 09:03 PM

Totally forgot about Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy, and Pakula's loose "conspiracy trilogy" of Klute, All the President's Men and the magnificent Parallax View.

Man, where are the Criterion editions of those already? They're all owned by Janus anyway.

NiCK Crush 07-16-08 11:37 PM

Nolan's Batman Trilogy ;)

Infernal Affairs?

I've only seen the 1st so I don't know the others measure up.

I'd vote Alien Trilogy, A:Res I don't really consider part of the franchise. Oh yeah, I loved Alien³

toddly6666 07-17-08 08:08 AM

mhg83,
There is a trilogy within that Bring It On Quadrilogy!;)

Same with Star Wars, there's a decent trilogy among that Sextilogy...

Hokeyboy 07-17-08 09:14 AM

I wonder why there's no love for the Apu trilogy? :(

chanster 07-17-08 09:23 AM

I will go with Godfather. I + II are powerhouses, III is unneccessary but doesn't do a lot of damage to the legacy. I actually kinda like the ending of III as well, but II's ending was still the best.

As for LOTR, man I feel those movies weren't that good, especially III.

visitor Q 07-17-08 09:48 AM

None of the above.

Toss up between Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy or Leone's Dollars trilogy.

I'd probably go with inri's choice as I've heard nothing but great things about the Human Condition trilogy, but at $100+ a pop I'll probably never get to see them all.

Good point. Alien3 is very underrated, and possibly better than Aliens imo.

chris_sc77 07-17-08 10:05 AM

On the list trilogy: LOTR
Not on the list: Leones "Trilogy" consisting of Once Upon A Time IN The West, Once Upon A time...The Revolution(AKA A Fistful of Dynamite or Duck, You Sucker), and Once Upon A Time IN America

bunkaroo 07-17-08 10:26 AM

Very very difficult for me to pick SW over LOTR but I did.

SW is the magical trilogy of my childhood. LOTR is the magical trilogy of my (debatable) adulthood. Nostalgia wins.

Sad that it took this long for a mention. Sadder still that there was no mention of Kieslowski's "Three Colors" until now.

toddly6666 07-17-08 12:34 PM

Eventhough they are both part of one story, I think the SW trilogy wins over LOTR because the SW films are more complete films by themselves.

New Hope and Jedi have endings, while only Return of the King has an ending. I feel a bit left hanging after watching the first two Lord of the Rings flicks.

So overall, SW trilogy slightly wins over LOTR trilogy because SW trilogy only has one left-hanging flick (Empire), while LOTR trilogy has two left-hanging flicks (Felowship and Towers).

Ronnie Dobbs 07-17-08 02:06 PM

Robocop of course.

Mountain Biker 07-17-08 02:49 PM

Such an easy choice...

The Original SW trilogy

I mentioned it earlier in this thread.

Well, considering that a grand total of zero people voted for Pather Panchali in my Best Film of 1955 poll, I'm not that surprised.

Calculon 07-17-08 06:58 PM

LOTR definitely. It just never loses its luster and wonder.

The Star Wars (IV-VI) movies i find only the first one watchable, the next two are starcraft games.

I'm going with Star Wars - LOTR is great, but there would be no LOTR without Star Wars.

I'd also like to toss Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" in for some love, too.

Noticed this on Criterion's web page:

"Return of The Human Condition
Masaki Kobayashi’s legendary, nearly ten-hour trilogy The Human Condition will return to the big screen, after two decades, this Friday, July 18, in new 35 mm prints from Janus Films. Opening at New York’s Film Forum before traveling around the country, the epic puts Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai center stage as a pacifist forced to fight for his country in World War II and also features well known (and frequently Criterion-featured) actors Chishu Ryu and Hideko Takamine. Click here for more information on present and upcoming playdates."

This would bode well for an eventual Criterion release.

Fok 07-18-08 02:47 AM

Star Wars all the way

Quake1028 07-18-08 09:18 AM

Damn, it's hard to pick between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

A New Hope = Fellowship
Empire Strikes Back >>>>> The Two Towers
Return of the King >>>>> Return of the Jedi

Ugh, I can't pick.

LotR wins just because The Two Towers was nowhere near the abortion Return of the Jedi was.

Cedrock 07-18-08 09:48 AM

i dont think i can ever understand how terminator could make it on the list before x-men or spiderman...(sorry that one person that voted for Terminator)

lordwow 07-18-08 10:30 AM

LOTR. Though Star Wars is inches away at 2nd.

Dude, I liked the ewoks!

Imagine the flaming that Lucas would have gotten if he tried to pull off cute teddy bears defeating a entire legion of stormtroopers.

Cardsfan111 07-18-08 11:34 AM

I'm voting Star Wars.

 at no love for Jurassic Park
