Star Wars (IV-VI) definitely. It just never loses its luster and wonder.

The LOTR movies i find only the first one watchable, the next two are world of warcraft games.

Trevor 07-16-08 03:46 PM

Star Wars is the best (imo), but LOTR is my favorite.

Doughboy 07-16-08 03:51 PM

The Holy Trilogy(aka Star Wars). Only the original versions though. Not the bastardized Special Editions.

The first LOTR movie is the only Five-Star, Triple-A, Top of the Line, Bonafide classic. That movie is pure magic and absolutely stellar from start to finish.

The next two... Two Towers was OK, maybe *** out of *****. It suffered from severe pacing problems and was unnecessarily padded, plus it lost a LOT of the inventiveness, magic and wonder of the first.

If anything Return of the King was even *more* unnecessarily padded than TT, but it was infinitely better produced that TT in every other way. **** out of *****.

I agree that the overabundance of bad CGI really damaged the last two flicks. There's absolutely nothing thrilling in watching one CGI army battle another CGI army. I get the feeling that Jackson, having been given more "free reign" with the last two movies after the first one became a worldwide smash, veered off into ponderous self-indulgence one too many times for my tastes.

Anyway I voted for Godfather given that Godfathers I & II are better than any other of the films listed, and even with its abundant flaws Godfather III is still an entertaining movie. But if I could go back, I'd probably vote for Jean Cocteau's loosely-knit Orphic Trilogy.

Toss up between LotR and SW. I went with SW because those films are endlessly rewatchable and they constantly provide that sense of awe and wonder that many people experienced the first time they watched them.

That's didn't really happen until King Kong.

Skyclad01 07-16-08 04:46 PM

OK, so im the odd man out it seems since my vote was for the Back To The Future trilogy.

By King Kong, I think Jackson was convinced he was Bunuel and Cocteau wrapped up together in a pretty pink bow.

tommyp007 07-16-08 04:57 PM

Star Wars.

Was going to post Die Hard, but then I remembered the fourth film.....

Kal-El 07-16-08 05:03 PM

The Original Trilogy of course. No question.

NoirFan 07-16-08 05:10 PM

Godfather. The first two films more than make up for the tired, pointless third. Other than the first Terminator, you couldn't pay me to watch any of the other trilogies listed in the poll. Someone else mentioned the Evil Dead trilogy - I second that. Though obviously not on a par with Godfather I and II, thats the only trilogy that I would have any interest in watching all three films of.

Really? You could pay me to watch just about anything.

mcnabb 07-16-08 06:14 PM

The Star Wars Trilogy (The Original Versions: Han shoots first, Shaw as the Force Ghost) still are the gold standard for Trilogies. They are the most rewatchable movies, and never get old. Great characters, great good vs evil story, great mythology, great humor, and awesome music by John Williams.

I will say that LOTR is a great achievement, and I give Jackson alot of credit for bringing those novels to the screen and creating a wonderful world. Although I think what hurts LOTR years later is that the movies are too damn long to watch over and over. Lucas and Spielberg got it right with SW & Indy, 2 hours, no more, no less.

BullGooseLoony 07-16-08 06:16 PM

I think the "Bourne" trilogy is the best trilogy since "Star Wars." Every film has it's own story, but is deeply rooted in the story preceding it.

John Ford's calvery trilogy:

1) Fort Apache
2) She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
3) Rio Grande

NoirFan 07-16-08 09:03 PM

Totally forgot about Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy, and Pakula's loose "conspiracy trilogy" of Klute, All the President's Men and the magnificent Parallax View.

Man, where are the Criterion editions of those already? They're all owned by Janus anyway.
