Re: Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes (dir. by Guy Ritchie)
I can't help but laugh derisively when I see this trailer. So awful. Downey is a great actor, but good lord.
So, basically, this version of Sherlock Holmes isn't about solving a mystery using his mad logic, it's about SAVING THE WORLD from magical evil forces!!! And instead of being a detective, he's basically a superhero. Ugh. It's got explosions fit for a Michael Bay pic, and the requisite hero caught handcuffed naked... why does this all look so nauseatingly familiar? Oh yeah, and it's a Guy Ritchie "film"... Mark my words: utter crap. |
Re: Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes (dir. by Guy Ritchie)
The Mirror falls somewhere between The Weekly World News and New York Post on the reliability scale, and Kung Fu Cinema ... I'll wait for Variety to confirm.

I liked reading the cast list better than watching the trailer

I also think the trailer looks awful, but every time I see it in the theaters the audience applauds. So it will probably do very well for itself.

My problem is the constant reiteration from the cast and crew that this film will be "true to the source", when it all too obviously is not.
Otherwise... I'm happy to see Robert Downey Jr. as my all-time favorite literary character, but it is a shame he will not be playing a faithful representation of a character who does not need re-invention. Methinks Ritchie will be even more the laughing stock as a result of this misjudgement.... unless it makes oodles of cash and then he'll be only be scorned by people the money-men don't much care about. I feel like ignoring the film on principle but will keep an eye open for when it screens on tv if only to see how they shoe-horned in the latterly-filmed Moriarty scenes/sub-plots. |

I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one who hated the trailer

I'd say I was shocked and dismayed that this movie was made but since we now live in an age where studios think Slinky: The Movie is a good idea... |

Looks like the Brad Pitt story was false. Read on IMDB this morning that the studio said it was "completely inaccurate." Interesting.

By Steven Zeitchik Just what to make of all the Brad Pitt rumors on Warners' Sherlock Holmes? First the Daily Mirror comes up with a startling revelation -- that Brad Pitt is in London, per the request of Guy Ritchie, to shoot scenes as Holmes' nemesis/villain Moriarty for thr pic. That's quickly picked up by a host of blogs -- and then just as quickly debunked by Warners, which releases a statement that Brad Pitt is not in fact in the Ritchie take. All quieted down for a couple days, until today, when MTV.com ran a snippet of an interview with Ritchie saying that Moriarty is indeed in the film, in what is some kind of cameo or stunt role (think Sean Connery in the Kevin Costner Robin Hood -- which is what we thought, and then saw MTV's Adam Rosenberg had thought the same). "Some kind of an appearance is probably the best way to describe it," the helmer tells the site, then goes on to say that the actor playing him is not credited, as far as he believes. In the meantime, there's lots of buzz around town that Warners is already working on a sequel to the film. That would mean Pitt's London trip could instead be prepping for the role of Moriarty the second pic. Or, of course, both could be true: This film could include some kind of credit sequence or other pop-up in which Pitt is teased in this movie in preparation for his fuller role in the next. Let's just hope the mysteries in the movie are this juicy. |

Phew...thank god thats been cleared up.
The movie still looks like an abomination. |
Re: Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes (dir. by Guy Ritchie)
When I think of Moriarty, the first person I think of is Brad Pitt. -ohbfrank-

Only if he talks like the Piker. ;)

Re: Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes (dir. by Guy Ritchie)
So Brad Pitt is in a cameo as Moriarty in his early, pre-nemesis, days? Feh. Sounds about as retarted as the rest that turned up regarding this movie.

Re: Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes (dir. by Guy Ritchie)
So I saw an early print of this and just wanted to say that I really enjoyed it. I found the trailers underwhelming and was worried this was going to be a James Bond-style action film, but it's really just a solid mystery pic which is something they don't really make anymore (parts of it recalled the mystery heyday of the 40s). Downey completely carries this film; he brings a unique quirkiness to the role that makes him fascinating to watch.
I can't say I'm versed in the Holmes canon so I don't know what was true to form or not, but as a fun, witty detective movie, I found it very entertaining. |
