Has a movie ever changed your view on life?
 

A friend just stopped by and I was watching "Fight Club". She had never seen it and I told her that it was one of my favorites and what it was about. And it occurred to me that this movie has (at least in part) contributed to my views on commercialism, materialism, gender roles in society etc. One quote in particular; "The things you own end up owning you." really sticks with me. I think of it often when I am considering buying something new.

So I ask... Has a movie ever changed (or assisted in changing) your views about things... for good or ill?

FIght CLub made me anti-social and made me hate people for quite a while.
Dont really know why it did. Same thing with Rules of Attraction.

Sometimes they make me think about things, but they don't normally change my mind. I'd say the last one to influence me somewhat was Into the Wild... just being free of material possessions.

American Beauty and the end of six feet under made me want to change and be a better person and all that kinda stuff I guess.

So, if you had a double feature with American Beauty and Fight Club, your outlook would depend on which film you watch last.

Funny, its been books that have changed my outlook on life. Movies have made me think but are too shallow an experience to deeply affect me.

Six Feet Under has deeply affected me and I believe changed how I relate to my friends and family. Eternal Sunshine didn't change my views on relationships, but helped me appreciate the little moments more...

"Six Feet Under", good call. I saw this thread and didn't open until now trying to think of a movie. But nothing comes close to "SFU". I'm not really a religious person, but "The Rapture" scared the crap out of me.

A few of you have mentioned "Six Feet Under". That is the show from HBO I assume? I have never seen it, but may need to pick it up...

Dear God, RUN to Blockbuster or Netflix and rent this series. It's the best drama I've ever seen on television. I was front and center every Sunday night when it was on. And own all the DVD's. Brilliant show. And so heart breaking.

The Phantom Menace made me realize I had to grow the f-ck up. ;)

The first two seasons were exemplary; things started to waver a bit in season three; by season four, the characters' heads had unfortunately retreated completely into their asses, taking their self-absorption to new heights and making a lot of them completely unlikeable in the process. Plus, some of the later storylines were pretty silly.

Oh well, at least Alan Ball got things back on track for the last couple of episodes.

Couldn't disagree with you more. I think the show dipped just a little in Season 3 or 4. A little uneven and was almost too dark even for this series. But still great television. And completely riveting (for me). And I think the show wrapped up beautifully in it's last year.

To each his own... Season 3 and 4 did take a different path, but a necessary one. They were much darker and depressing compared to the first 2, but they were essential to the characters journey, IMHO. Season 5 was a masterstroke, and it cemented itself as the best in American drama, television or film.

Gone Baby Gone certainly made me think about my opinion on the subject matter.

Yes. That movie is known as 'Attack of Killer Klowns From OuterSpace'. Ever since that movie I have been scared of clowns and never view them as evil objects that only want to eat me.

Looks like this thread is going a bit off-topic but I need to add something about Six Feet Under. I'm glad I watched the entire show without knowing hardly anything and without reading any posts about it. Sure, it's the kind of show you feel like talking about afterwards but the less preconceived notions going in, the better in my opinion.

Well, I certainly went into this show with less than zero preconceived notions. I didn't even know what it was when it first came on. And I'm telling you, I was hooked from the first minute. Television has never done that to me before. Including "The Sopranos". I hate the "M" word, but this show truly is a masterpiece.

On a more serious note, I concur with Six Feet Under. Brilliant material.
