The movie premiered March 16, 2001 and ended up on many critics' 10 best list for that year (2001). It was also up for two Oscars that year (including Best Original Screenplay which I never understood since it's an adaptation of a short story by Nolan's brother). There's no reason to included it in this list except that IMBD lists it as a 2000 film. It really isn't, not in the way we normally consider a movie's release date.

Bottom line : If you consider Casablanca a 1943 film (everyone does, it won the Oscar for best picture of that year even though it premiered in New York in Nov. 1942), then you HAVE to consider Memento a 2001 film.

The real question is, who saw Memento in the theater? It was a pretty limited run, IIRC. I saw it and couldn't stop thinking about it weeks later trying to convince other people to go see it.
