Stan Winston: R.I.P
Update:
A little more detail: Winston died at home Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma. http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news...ws.php?id=6556 Lots of sites picking it up now: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ente...inston-de.html http://blogs.news-journalonline.com/...n_winston.html http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/06/...ston-has-died/ http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/06/16/stan-winston-died/ Man this sucks. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/37106 Steve Wang, known effects maestro, sent out a myspace bulletin saying he's confirmed it with the shop. This is an incredibly sad day. Word is cancer, but I don't know anything past that. I didn't want to post it as definitive since there has been no word from his estate or from Stan Winston Studios... but I've gotten over a dozen private confirmations from people who knew him or worked with him now, so I went ahead and changed the headline. Also: http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080616l.php Damn. :( |
R.I.P Stan :(
|
Awaiting further proof, but if it's true, what a tremendous loss.
|
aw, man! ... R.I.P Stan
|
Iron Man was his last film. At least he left us on a high note.
|
Damn. I was just reading an article remembering Tim Russert. The year's not even half way over, but all these greats keep passing.
Wasn't he supposed to work on Terminator 4? A huge loss for that film, I reckon. |

An absolute legend. His absence will definitely be felt in the future.

Sweet Jesus... Stan Winston was a God among FX artists. His work was always some of the best I'd ever seen. I grew up on a steady diet of his creations. This is a huge loss. I'll try to watch some of his better works in remembrance. R.I.P.

I am shocked. This is some sad news. RIP Stan Winston, you helped change the face of movies.
|
Wow, this came out of nowhere. He was only 62.
R.I.P. Stan. A huge loss for the film industry. |
Rarely does a famous person's death literally suck the wind out of me. Last time was Anthony Minghella's death. Before that, Jim Henson. Stan Winston was one of the truly great figures in filmmaking.
|
Updated the first post with an additional article from Dark Horizons confirming it.
|
wow! nobody like him. what great FX movie didn't he do. rip.
so that is Tim Russert, Stan Winston, and ? very sad week for luminaries. |
So many of my greatest cinema memories were created by this man. Sad, sad news.

Transcript of what just happened at my house:
Me: Oh no! Mother: What? Me: Stan Winston died. This is really sad to me. M: Who? Me: Visual effects guy, did all the stuff on Terminator and the Penguin in Batman Returns... M: ... Me: The dinosaurs from Jurassic Park... M: Oh, okay. :( This one is especially heartbreaking to me. All of his stuff was iconic: Aliens, T2, Batman Returns, Predator, Jurassic Park, The Thing...all great. And yes, Iron Man was indeed an end on a high note. |
He set a path that most in his field can only follow...
:rip: Stan Winston |
This is seriously F**kin' weak.
Stan Winston was the man. He designed the best creatures and effects in the history of film IMO. I remember being around 8 or 9 years old and already knowing his name and who he was and would be excited whenever we was attached to do work on a new film. He was one of the first behind-the-camera filmmakers who I really knew by a name basis. Jurassic Park, Aliens, Predator, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Big Fish, A.I. were all wonderful memorable films in large part due to Stan's involvement and imagination and craftsmanship. RIP sir. |
:( wow....
|
An icon who made icons. This is horrible news. Always came across as a decent, stand up guy too. Hollywood just took a major hit.
|
This is a huge loss for horror/sci-fi fans, especially for those of us who abhor the over reliance of CGI in modern genre films.
