They're both on the same [elevated] level for me. I really like Shyamalan's movies. I don't really like Uwe Boll's movies. But I do really like Uwe Boll.

Wait, are we talking about Uwe Boll or Uwe Blab?

Both seem to be arrogant filmmakers who completely overestimate their talent at the expense of their professional reputation.

The difference is, M. Night has had much, much more talent and success than Uwe Boll. Most Shyamalan movies make more in a day than Uwe Boll's movies make in total.

I don't agree with someone's suggestion (in one of the other 23 Shyamalan threads we have) that he's one of the best directors "of our time"... At best, he's one of the most interesting "mainstream" directors (behind Gore Verbinski).

And I wouldn't consider myself a fan or apologist. To date, Signs is the only Shyamalan movie I own.

Nah. Like him or not, at least M.Night tries to be original...

Each and every one of Shyamalan's films is worse than the one before it.

Boll's films are starting to get better each time.

I'd rather see Boll's next film.

So Sixth Sense was worse than Wide Awake?

It's a tough call. I think Uwe Boll is a genuinely talentless filmmaker. No, hack. To call him a filmmaker is an insult to filmmakers. Night tries to be original, which is commendable, but his shortcoming is his inability to recognize when he's wrong. He thought Disney was closed-minded when they passed on Lady, then they had the last laugh when it was box office poison. Night needs to step back, relax, and use a writing partner with some considerable talent to write the best damn comeback, big twist ending (let's face it, that will be with him forever) story that people will talk about for years. Until then, he'll be an egomaniac with no limitations.

Supermallet 06-16-08 06:54 PM

The last thing he needs is another film with a twist ending. He needs to make a movie that shows he can make great films without twist endings. The best way to do this would be to direct an excellent script written by somebody else.

I dunno M. Nights first 3 movies were all excellent, The Village was pretty good I haven't seen Lady in The Water and The Happening yet.

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing a Uwe film yet but I've heard they range from so bad it's good to pure shit.

A tend to agree. The only reason I said he should continue to use "the twist" is because JSP will forever associate his films with one. If it's not there, neither will JSP. I'd like to see him direct someone else's script becasue it will also serve to remind him that there are plenty of other talented writers working today, and he should challenge himself by filming someone else's written material.

I got off the "Night" train with Signs. What a boring piece of shit that was.

mrflix 06-17-08 09:17 PM

The problem with Night is that after Signs was such a hit he feels like he can slap together anything and people will flock to it.

I was hoping "The Happening" would flop big time, but unfortunately had a decent enough opening weekend.

However I will say that I enjoyed "Sixth Sense" "Unbreakable" and "Signs". "Unbreakable" is still a very good piece of cinema and a nicely done original "comic book" story.

 (starting with The Sixth Sense of course)

Ronnie Dobbs 06-17-08 11:17 PM

The shit thing about "The Happening" is it had a interesting premise until it got all ecological and shit. I think the killings were a bit excessive too.

Zen Peckinpah 06-17-08 11:48 PM

Brett Ratner deserves Uwe Boll hate for eternity, not so much Shyamalan. At least with him, what you see is what you get. Ratner...you never know how badly he'll fuck up.
