Weekend Box Office Thread - June 13th - June 15th, 2008 - Hulk is happening.
So the big question was, would Ang Lee's Hulk hurt this one?

No.
The Happening shows even with damaged credibility, all it takes is an interesting trailer/ad campaign to get asses in seats. I assume The Happening will end up with around $25m for the weekend. Even if this is the most hated movie of all time, it will have absolutely no effect on his upcoming adaptation of Avatar, which has such a huge built-in fan base that Uwe Boll could direct and it would still make beaucoup bucks.

Well, considering the poor reception Hulk got, this one looks like it's going to do pretty good business... What, a $60-65m opening weekend? And with good WOM, could finish close to or even past $200m. Kind like Batman Begins really (if BB had a 3-day opening, it would've been around $60m or so).
Oh, btw, with a $12m opening day for The Happening, it could make close to $30m for the weekend, even with bad WOM...

True but R-rated movies are notorious for front loading, I expect around $25m because of that.

I say $132 million tops. (Which was my original prediction months ago I believe)
I think Hulk no matter how good word of mouth will be will still be extremely front loaded.
Even if the Happening only has a $25 million weekend thats gotta be considered a success for an R-rated film with horrendous reviews and massive hate.
I'm kinda torn if I even want the happening to do well. I do love to see an R-rated film do well but I hate to see 90 minute movies do well. And I really enjoyed 6th sense, Unbreakable, Signs and the villiage but LITW was one of the worst films I have ever seen and refuse to give M. Night another chance in theaters. Especially after seeing a laughably bad scene on COnan a few nights ago. Still, I'm shocked how well it did.

I have predicted all along that The Incredible Hulk would follow the same pattern as Batman Begins. Batman Begins was brilliant but it followed the terrible Batman and Robin. The previous film in a series seems to have a huge influence on the box office of the next film regardless of the reviews. Batman Begins slowly built a respectable box office due to the word of mouth but it didn't find its audience until DVD. Dark Knight will be huge because of how good Batman Begins was. Ang Lee's Hulk was certainly no Batman and Robin but it was a disappointment overall which is going to hurt the Incredible Hulk box office. The fact that its a great film too, I'm sure it will find it's audience on DVD. I just hope Marvel Studios recognizes this because we need more Hulk movies. The Incredible Hulk is one of the best comic book characters in the Marvel universe and the books have been great for a long time. There is a wealth of material out there, and this film was a huge step in the right direction.

Yeah, thinking the Hulk will only make $132 million with the above-average WOM is pretty laughable. It'll top $150 million easily, and probably end up in the $160- $170 territory.

I see Hulk making about 50+ for the wknd (friday will probably be it's biggest day). So, that is slightly less than the original, but with better WOM it could probably reach 150million. I wouldn't expect much more than that... hopefully it's enough for them to consider another one.

Unlike Ang Lee's Hulk, I don't think this new version will lose business on Saturday, nor will it drop 69% during weekend #2. It should reach over $60 million this weekend and fly past the first film's $132 million finish. Next weekend the competition is Get Smart and The Love Guru.

chris, you are always wrong, it seems.
Even if you follow the pattern of bad WOM Speed Racer had, you can see what happens:
Speed Racer:
Opening weekend - 18.5 million
Cash to date - 42 million
Growth percentage - 42/18.5 = 227%
Incredible Hulk:
Opening weekend - 60 to 65 million
Projected earnings - 136 to 147.5 million
And Hulk has much better WOM than Speed Racer, that piece of trash. Your 132 million projection is the absolute worst case scenario, but to say there is 'no way' 150 million is possible is ludicrous.

I do change my mind now maybe a little and say it might do a little more than what the first one did when you factor in inflation. I think overall the amount of tickets sold for the 2003 Hulk and the 2008 The Incredible Hulk will end up being about the same. And I like Both hulk films quite a bit and think they rate about equal and it looks like they will end up performing about the same as well.
Just to be sure, are you saying the same is going to happen here?
