I'm sure this was mentioned here, but who was "The Sleeping Man" and was it ever mentioned outright?

I enjoyed the second half of the movie more than the first, but overall was disappointed.
The Sleeping Man was a mountain that resembled a man laying down. It was supposed to reflect the "chocolate giant", hammered home in the scene where the soldier is choking the officer and the film shows his face with the mountain in the background.
And you know, for the all the comments I read about the overbearing music (yes, Spike Lee tends to drown all his films in music) I didn't find the score as smothering as I was expecting. I enjoyed the movie enough to watch it again sometime, but I'm sure I will skip the opening and closing scenes. I agree with Roger Ebert's review where he wrote (paraphrasing) "The film ends with one of the characters walking towards another on a beach. The problem is the wrong man is doing the walking."
