Full Metal Jacket 2nd half- yay or nay?
Yay for me. Many say the movie becomes less interesting after the film leaves boot camp, i used to think it was this bleak bleak thing to view, but then i realized that was the intention by Kubrick to make you feel the war as well as see it, like Coppola once said "my movie isn't about Vietnam, it IS Vietnam" Also i like how it's the only nam movie that centers on the battle of Hue city, the largest battle of the war, no jungles here.

I enjoy it, but nowhere near as much as the first half. I'm pretty engrossed during the boot camp, but once they leave, I'll only partially pay attention.
Good movie all around, though. |
I love the whole movie, and it's broken into 3 parts not 2. Kubrick always had this thing with threes.
I like the parts after the bootcamp more, too. |
It's all good ((I have only seen this movie once)).
|
Yay...I love it all.
|
Without the 2nd part, where would 2 Live Crew get their sample from?
|
I like the bootcamp part more ... after that, it tends to blend with other war movies in my mind.

It may be low brow but I have to go with the majority. I loved the first part, partly due to the fact that boot camps have always interested me (even my own) and also because out of the long string of 80's war movies it was the only one that did so (I don't count Heartbreak Ridge, as that was not boot camp).
The 2nd half was good but I didn't like Modine's character or acting, and the rest seemed the same as any other war movie of the time. |

Nay. The first half barely gets a yay from me.
It's weird because I really dig Kubrick, I just don't like FMJ. Or Eyes Wide Shut. |

Nay.
Maybe since I was in the military, the bootcamp scenario resonated more with me. Plus, I've never been a fan of Matthew Modine. |
The boot camp stuff is more memorable but I do like the movie as a whole. So yay!
|
I suppose the first half is the more gripping, but the second is good too, although maybe not as good as it could have been!
|
Rad14 it's the Vietnam War none of it was good, but this movie is rock soild from start to finish.
|
movie is brilliant from start to finish like all of Kubrick's work
|
Although the 2nd half of the movie introduced me to a Baldwin (Non-related to Alec,Stephen,William, and Daniel) it still wasn't enough to persuade me that an AK-47 is capable of doing tremendous sniper damage.
|
But you saw it in a movie!

Obviously I wasn't inferring that the Vietnam War was good! I was talking about the cinematic qualities of the movie -rolleyes- |
I find the second half of the film to be less compelling than the film, but it's still watchable. The second half has its share of great moments, it's just not as consistent as the first half.
|
yay! i don't think it would have endured as long as it has without equal parts brilliance.
|
Maybe they can do a special edition release called Bootcamp stories where we get the first half of Stripes, FMJ, and In the Army Now :)

Unwatchable to me.
