While perhaps the most creepy trailer I've seen, it also looks curiously intriguing.
|
I went from mild intrigue to fervent impatience with this film. The newer trailer is dynamite, and I'm finally coming around to the idea that it could be a major awards contender. Since The Wrestler, The Road, and The Soloist got pushed back, this is pretty much the only film I'm really looking forward to that I can likely see before the year is out.

The Road was. The Wrestler is still set for a late December released in Limited, afaik, thats how it was always set (It will open on December 31st for Oscar purposes, wider release on Jan 16th). Something tells me those internet savvy, unethical you-know-whos will be seeing The Wrestler before the rest of us. (I'm talking about film critics, of course...)

Oscar-nominated composer Alexandre Desplat is scoring the film.

Brief early industry review emailed to Variety:
It's magic realism propelled by extraordinary filmmaking technology but it's not remotely what I'd call cold. It creates a world of oddities and wonderful, off-kilter characters but the whole piece is anchored by a decades long relationship that gets strained, frayed, breaks and rebuilds into something profound and moving. The achievement is big and bold and ambitious and life-affirming, but the sentimentality is always toughened by the continual sense of loss and deep sadness at the transitory nature of the human condition. If it sounds like an art movie, it absolutely is, but it's a four quadrant art film! |
Read the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story that inspired the film.

Despite not liking Brad Pitt at all, & always feeling he is very overrated as an actor, I find myself more & more looking foward to this movie. Helps that Blanchet & Swinton are my two favorite actresses. I have a feeling that if the story really works in this movie, this could be a modern classic & have really good legs at the box office.

Variety review:
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" represents a richly satisfying serving of deep-dish Hollywood storytelling. This odd, epic tale of a man who ages backwards is presented in an impeccable classical manner, every detail tended to with fastidious devotion. An example of the most advanced technology placed entirely at the service of story and character, this significant change-of-pace from director David Fincher poses some daunting marketing challenges, even with Brad Pitt atop the cast. Strong critical support will be needed to swell interest in this absorbing, even moving, but emotionally cool film, which is simultaneously accessible and distinctive enough to catch on with a large public if luck and the zeitgeist are with it. |
new tv spot that was just on fox was great, film really looks amazing.

This is #2 on my watch list behind Doubt. Likely one of the locks for a Best Picture nomination and it'll rack up on technical nominations as well.
|
I have tickets to a special screening tomorrow night here in Nashville. I am very excited!
|
I've got 'rush passes' to see this on Wednesday, hopefully I'll get in.

Didnt they do the baby aging backwards on Mork and Mindy in the 80's??
I am not sure about this one, |

I think Fincher is going more for a lack of "Fincher-Style" lately. All his films have a dark palette, but beyond Se7en and Fight Club, there haven't really been any wretched and decrepit environments that seem to scream "Fincher-Style." He seems to get more classy and confident as each film passes. It's that restraint that really impresses me.
Then again, his last few films didn't really need cameras swooping upside down and inside out while characters have sex. The best of his darker films IMO. |

All I have to say is: Wow.
Beautiful film. Brilliantly acted. Best of 08. |

ditto.

What can I say? The pace of the film was perfect. Fincher and Roth dig deep in the study of death, love, and loneliness, and it's hard to imagine it being done any better. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were simply brilliant, and should earn many awards. Visually, it's gorgeous. From the snow in Russia, to Cate Blanchett's silhouette floating in the dark. Be ready to shed some man tears. I sure did, but I am a depressed emotional little bloke. http://smiliesftw.com/x/hsughno.gif

That'll do. Gives me something to think about. Thanks.

Nice usage of the Arcade Fire in this commercial I recently saw

Watch Cate Blanchett talk about her character, interspersed with a clip from the film.

An article on Wired.com about the process of digitally aging Brad Pitt.

Article here about the similarity to a 2004 book called The Confessions Of Max Tivoli more than the F. Scott Fitzgerald book. Wonder if this is going to cause some problems.
|
Ebert gave it a 2.5 out of 4, calling it splendidly made but ultimately pointless.

Seeing this Boxing Day, can't wait.

Having seen pretty much all the awardbait films, I still hold that best picture will be between Button and Slumdog, and I think Button will take it. |
F. Scott Fitzgerald is looking down, smiling and proud, at this. This film surely could not have been made any earlier, due to how much CGI would be required to make this realistic.
I can't wait to see it. |
Brilliant film, Fincher's best to date.
