Dawn of the Dead 2 (Sequel to the original!)

I just read this news over at Bloody-disgusting.com :

"The other day the Hollywood Reported confirmed this story that Producer Richard Rubinstein is planning a direct sequel to George A. Romero's legendary Dawn of the Dead, which ends with the survivors hopping in a helicopter and taking off to who knows where. We got the inside scoop this morning that star TONY TODD (Candyman, Final Destinations, Hatchet) is in talks to star in the sequel to the film, which told the story of four people's escape from an urban nightmare to a suburban one. They barricade themselves in a shopping mall and try to start new lives. Todd starred as Ben in Tom Savini's 1990 remake of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD."

This could be the best thing ever or really suck, there might not be any middle ground. Casting Candyman is genius, though.

Regardless, I'm excited.

I Want To Believe.

Dimension X 05-22-08 10:35 AM

It has to be better than that Contagium crap.

riotinmyskull 05-22-08 10:37 AM

if romero isn't directing and savini isn't doing the effects and the filmstock isn't from the 70's then i don't give a shit.

cultshock 05-22-08 11:32 AM

I have my doubts about this turning into something good, but I could definitely see Tony Todd playing the role of Peter.

islandclaws 05-22-08 11:42 AM

Can anyone tell me why Foree can't play Peter? Aside from a few extra pounds he looks the same. Anyways, this sounds like a shit idea with Rubinstein looking to cash in on the immense popularity of Romero's original. I have no doubts it will suck ass. The ONLY possible way it could be good would be with Romero directing, Savini handling FX work and Gaylen Ross returning with Ken Foree.

So this is a direct follow-up to the Ving Rhames/Sarah Polley remake? If they can keep that tone and style in it - I'd give it a shot.

DeputyDave 05-22-08 01:37 PM

I'm OK with anyone and everyone making a zombie movie. I'll go on record again by saying every single movie ever should be remade, but with zombies.

If it sucks, the original still exists.

I do wish the same stories wern't being rehashed as much, though. I'd like to see the comic series "Walking Dead" made into a movie (or beter yet, an HBO series) or maybe "World War Z".

No it looks like it will pick up where the original left off. The survivors leaving the mall in a helicopter.

Interesting. I wonder when we'll get a sequel to the remake?

wait ... I thought Dawn of the Dead 2 was Day of the Dead ... ;)

they should call it 'Midday break with the Dead' or 'Coffe Time with the Dead' or 'Water Cooler Conversation with the Dead'

Up until Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead I would have agreed with you. Now I think it would be better if anyone else directed it. Its sad, really.

I am interested in seeing how this plays out.. I'm all for zombie movies. Some of them just don't live up.

JackBurton 05-22-08 02:36 PM

I actually really liked Tom Savini's 1990 NOTL remake. I thought Todd did well in that one.

Giles 05-22-08 02:53 PM

speaking of zombies, I thought a film adaptation of 'World War Z' was coming out - the book is amazing BTW.

Same here, I thought Savini did a great job with the remake. It was faithful enough to the original, but with some surprises. I really loved the way Savini approached the "Zombie-Look" with the effects department in that film.

Didn't Romero re-write the script for the Savini remake of NOTLD?

I wouldn't mind a sequel to Dawn, especially if Tony Todd is lead.

I feel the same way.

Agree 100%.

A few extra pounds and a few extra decades. There's no way he can do a sequel that picks up right after they escape the mall.

I love zombie flicks too, but I like the open ending of the original DotD. Just make a zombie movie, forget about cashing in on the name. Land of the Dead wasn't very good. Haven't see Diarrhea of the Dead yet.

Or, if they take the helicopter to...
Mexico: Siesta of the Dead

London: Tea Time of the Dead

Canada: Snow Day of the Dead

the possibilities are truly endless.

Mr. Cinema 05-23-08 04:54 PM

I think I'd rather have Zack Snyder do a sequel to his version.

Jackskeleton 05-23-08 04:58 PM

Yeah, at least the remake was a lot better than diary..

cactusoly 05-23-08 07:15 PM

what about Zombie 2 ?

Sean O'Hara 05-23-08 07:51 PM

So let me see if I have this right.

Romero made Night of the Living Dead in 1968.

He then made the sequels, Dawn, Day, Land, and Diary of the Dead.

Night, Dawn, and Day have all been remade. In addition, some of the people involved with Night went back and shot some additional scenes giving the film a religious overtone.

Dawn has two semi-sequels at present -- Zombi 2 and Contagium -- with a third, more direct, sequel being planned.

Then there are the five or six Return of the Living Dead films which are set in a world where Night is a documentary about what happened after a chemical accident.

There've also been two short story collections set in the Dead world, including a piece by Stephen King.

And then there's Shaun of the Dead which has enough references to the Dead films that it could be considered an unofficial sequel.

Anything I'm forgetting? A comic book perhaps?
