Nic Cage to star in 'Bad Lieutenant'

Nic Cage to star in 'Bad Lieutenant'
Werner Herzog directing updated version of film
By DAVE MCNARY, PAMELA MCCLINTOCK
Nicolas Cage will star in an updated version of 1992's "Bad Lieutenant" with Werner Herzog directing, Edward R. Pressman producing and Avi Lerner's Nu Image/Millennium Films financing.

Project, also called "Bad Lieutenant," is due to be announced at Cannes. Production will start in late summer.

The original pic, produced by Pressman, starred Harvey Keitel and was directed by Abel Ferrara from a screenplay by Ferrara and Zoe Lund.

Story followed the depraved New York police officer of the title, who was heavily involved in drugs, gambling, sex and stealing; the pic received an NC-17 rating.

The new script's penned by Billy Finkelstein, a TV writer with credits on "Murder One," "Law & Order" and "NYPD Blue." Stephen Belafonte, who brought Finkelstein to the project, is also producing, while development was financed by producers Alan and Gabe Polsky.

Along with Lerner, Nu Image/Millennium's Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson will exec produce with Elliot Rosenblatt and Alessandro Camon. Randall Emmett and Cage's Saturn Films are also producing.

Cage is filming "Knowing" in Australia for director Alex Proyas. Herzog's expected to follow "Bad Lieutenant" with Focus' "The Piano Tuner" late this year.

Updating a film that's only 16 years old?!

I've never seen the original, is it worth the 90 minutes?

It's a classic. Martin Scorsese called it one of the great films about faith. Reams of critics gave it 4 stars. It's the peak performance of Harvey Keitel's great run in the 1990s.

It's worth more than 90 minutes.

Wasn't Keitel nude in that one? Granted, the man does love to be nude in movies.

If you've always wanted to see Harvey Keitel's shriveled, small penis, then, yes.

This is a movie that should not be remade. Harvey's performance was amazing. The film is a classic and one of my favorites.

Roger Ebert said, " And in the bad lieutenant, Keitel has given us one of the great screen performances in recent years."

I really DONT want to see Nic wanking off - why what's the point of this remake? Apparently Werner didn't see the 'Wicker Man' remake - Nic Cage + remake = stinker.

What else have them been "updating" that's barely a decade old? And I'm not counting Batman Begins.

With Herzog directing, it could be interesting.

They really need to pass a law that at least 25 years has to pass before considering a remake.

I cannot wait until next years 'Speed Racer' remake.

i wonder if Nic Cage's penis makes the same "acting" face as Nic Cage. I really don't ever want to find out.

But if Herzog is directing I can't completely rule this flick out.

Yeah, but most of your examples are foreign films that were remade for American audiences. Isn't Bad Lieutenant already an American film?

Yay a new and improved family friendly version of Bad Lieutenant for the new millenium (we all now it won't be like the original - way too controversial for today)

The only thing that makes this remotely interesting is that Herzog is directing. I still think it's a terrible idea, though. Keitel was phenomenal in that role. You can tell he had so much raw emotion and all of his talent involved in making that character, and I don't think, nay I KNOW, Nic Cage can't do it justice. I like Cage, sometimes, but this is as bad an idea as his Wicker Man remake.

I can only hope it'll get us a fully-loaded SE of the original. I'd love a new edition.

BTW, if you ever want a girl to break up with you, have her come over and watch Bad Lieutenant together. If she actually likes it, she's a keeper, or truly psychotic...
