wow speed racer isn't doing so well.

d2cheer 05-10-08 12:42 PM

50% drop for Iron Man isn't too bad since it made so much last weekend. Ouch for Speed Racer, but it didn't really look that good either.

Looks like it will be the first bomb of the summer most places had it making at least 30 million this week.

Dane Marvin 05-10-08 01:11 PM

I enjoyed Speed Racer to a degree (I did get to see it at an IMAX, which was my very first time in an IMAX theater, so that may have upped the ante for me) but agree with Jamie Rich's review that is was about 30 minutes too long. However, heartily disagree with it being the worst movie of the year so far. Did that jerk actually watch 10,000 BC or was he just pretending? Has he seen some of the horror movies that have already come out this year? Jeez, at least Speed Racer had some heart and dazzling visuals and audio. Everything about 10,000 BC wreaked to high heaven, even the limited and limp-dicked action sequences.

Very shocked that Speed didn't top What Happens In Vegas in ticket sales yesterday, but I am not shocked that Iron Man still has a ton of momentum. What a great flick that was.

PopcornTreeCt 05-10-08 01:35 PM

Good job for Iron Man. I thought Speed Racer looked decent but certainly not something I'd see in the theatre. It bombing is not really surprising as it really had no appeal at all.

sauce07 05-10-08 01:39 PM

wow, huge bomb. This thing is going to get crushed even more next weekend with Narnia. this thing could leave theaters with less then 40 million.

superdeluxe 05-10-08 01:46 PM

Man Speed Racer won't even make 20 million jesus. that is bombing.

While Iron man is looking at between 49-54 million for the weekend, which is heading towards a 50% drop, which is fantastic.

tonymontana313 05-10-08 01:48 PM

I've seen a 250mil to 300mil thrown around as a budget and marketing figure for Speed Racer. I'm sure heads are going to roll at WB for this blunder.

Another Warner Brothers Summer disaster. Probably not as bad as Poseidon or The Invasion, but it's close. I believe the "production" budget was $100 million. Prints and ads will increase that total as well.

islandclaws 05-10-08 02:26 PM

Wow. SR just got totally pwned... but an Ashton Kutcher film. I can't believe that's doing better than SR. This is a HUGE bomb considering the production and marketing costs involved. No surprise with Iron Man. Glad to see it's got some legs. I'm guessing it leaves theaters with about $250m-ish.

Well, this might take care of Lana (formally, Larry) and Andy's careers...

Brack 05-10-08 03:48 PM

Klady has reported Iron Man to be more around $12.5, but that's still a good hold.

GatorDeb 05-10-08 04:08 PM

Me personally I enjoyed Speed Racer more, and want to watch it again on Imax. Will also get the HVD. I enjoyed IM but not as much, and will probably skip the HVD.

While I was watching SR one thought kept popping up: This movie is FUN.

Oh please. They created the Matrix trilogy. Worldwide that made over 1.6 BILLION dollars in theaters alone, not even counting DVD or merchandise sales. One bomb (even a big one) will not end them. Now if this Speed Racer film were their first movie, then I'd probably agree that their careers would be hurt very badly.

That's one way to look at it. Another is

Bounce - 36 million box office in the US - 35 million production budget
Matrix - 171 million box office in the US - 63 million production budget
Matrix Reloaded - 281 million box office in the US - 150 million production budget
Matrix Revolutions - 139 million box office in the US - 150 million production budget
Speed Racer - Projected to make 50 million or so in the US - production budget unknown (lets say 150 million which seems about right)

Added up = 677 million in US revenue vs. 548 production costs

I understand that I didn't include worldwide box office or dvd sales but I also didn't include the marketing budgets. They have had one small film, two box office hits, and two box office bombs which were their last flicks. This might not be the end of their career but I doubt they'll get another big budget film until they make a profit with lesser films.

TGM 05-10-08 05:40 PM

Um, I think you meant "Bound", not "Bounce" :) TOTALLY different movies.

Brent L 05-10-08 05:44 PM

I said this in a thread last week:

I think that even most of those of you saying no are giving Speed Racer too much credit.

I think it's going to be the biggest dud of the year. It won’t quite be as low or as badly received as, say, Thunderbirds, but it'll be a huge disappointment. I'll be shocked, truly shocked, if I'm wrong on this.

Iron Man will still be #1, and it'll likely make twice as much as what Speed Race brings in, if not even more than that. I'm not even convinced that Speed Racer will be #2. It will be lucky to be able to even reach that high.
I'm still shocked that people thought it would be anything close to a hit. That trailer, wow, it just the stink of a bomb all over it.

Brack 05-10-08 05:45 PM

Don't get your point. Not trying to be rude, I just have no clue what that has to do with what I was saying.

The opening of the movie had zero to do with the Wachowskis or the quality of the movie and everything to do with how well this film was marketed. The marketing department failed to connect with kids. I think they thought a lot of teens and fanboys would come out to see it, and it looks like they were wrong.

No Sex Change for 'Matrix' Director Larry Wachowski
Thursday, September 06, 2007
By Roger Friedman

'Matrix' Director: No Sex Change, Thanks

Larry Wachowski is still a man.

The co-director of the "Matrix" movies was rumored to have had a sex-change operation recently. Internet sites started buzzing recently that Larry was now called Lana. Someone even edited his Wikipedia entry to that effect. The Wachowski Brothers, they said, were about to become the Donny and Marie of filmmaking.

I must say, returning from a two week trip to Africa, I found this news rather startling.

Of course, Larry Wachowski — who’s reportedly into a lot of wild, tough stuff — has encouraged this kind of speculation among his fans and the press. He dates a dominatrix and publicizes it.

He let his wife’s vague angry language in their divorce filing make it seem as though as he was on the verge of a huge announcement. Either he was becoming a woman or turning into a pygmy.

Either way, Larry Wachowski’s purported sex change is right up there with "Paul Is Dead" and the "Beaver Died in Vietnam."

And it’s not true.

On Wednesday, I had lovely chats with people at the sound studio in Germany where the Wachowskis have been making the live action version of the Japanese cartoon "Speed Racer." The folks I spoke to got quite a kick out of the whole thing.

I asked one man in building operations, "Have you seen Larry lately? Does he have breasts now, as rumored? Is he wearing a dress, wondering if it’s making him look fat?"

Laughter. “He looked like a man to me,” was the response.

And what about this Lana business? Said one woman who worked in the "Speed Racer" office: “On the call sheets, it still says Larry. There’s no Lana.” She laughed too.

Rats! Where is the gossip when you need it? An assistant to one of the producers got on the phone.

“None of it is true,” he said. We spent several minutes rehashing all the stories that were floating around out there.

Finally, I did speak with Joel Silver, who executive produces the W Brothers' movies.

“It’s all untrue,” he reconfirmed for me. “They just don’t do interviews, so people make things up.”

Disappointed? I know. I am too.

But I think Larry, er Lana, has gotten the last laugh, at least for now.

What does that have to do with anything when it comes to Hollywood?

Their last two movies were bombs. My point was that they won't be getting another big budget project until they turn a profit on smaller films. Do you think studios will give them another 100 million dollar film despite their last film losing tons of money because the "Marketing department failed to connect"?
