RIP. In addition to watching him on TV, I always enjoyed his reviews books.

Tomorrow will be five years to the day since this thread was started.

I invoked him earlier today when talking about INFRAMAN on the B-Movie Challenge thread over on DVD Talk. Ebert was an early champion of that Hong Kong superhero masterpiece. For that alone, he's always had an honored place in the critical pantheon in my book. Even better, he also championed MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO when it was first released here.

Very sad, I greatly admired him as a television personality, and when that ability left him I admired him even more for the fantastic writer he was. The only celebrity I really wanted to have meet.

Thanks for everything Roger. You will be missed.

I hadn't been reading his stuff as much in the last few years, but his Great Movies series was my gateway into the world of film.

Same here. I've actually been making a point of trying to see everything on his Great Movies list. I didn't always agree with him, but I became familiar enough with his tastes that I could usually tell whether or not I would like a certain film based on his reviews.

The guy definitely had his WTF moments (didn't he also praise Cop and a Half?) but on the whole he had way more hits than misses.

Even when he did miss he backed it up with reasonable analysis of why he came to that conclusion so it's hard to dismiss any of his reviews.

Man... this really sucks. We've lost such a treasure in Ebert and his reviews.

'Die Hard' is such a lousy, terrible film, I can't stand to watch even 2 minutes of it since I grew up and developed some understanding about film.

My enjoyment of Ebert's contributions affect me on a personal level. I am a nobody, but really took a lot away from his material, and feel like I knew the guy. The shit just got real. RIP, Ebert.

So sad to hear about Roger's passing. I was a fan of Roger since he and Gene worked on At the Movies years ago and I was a regular viewer of Siskel and Ebert & the Movies on Saturdays when I was a teenager.

I admit I haven't really followed him that much especially after Roeper left his show and then he quit TV because of the cancer. But, he put up a really courageous fight. If there is a heaven, I hope that he and Gene are reunited and are arguing about movies once again.
