Top tragic movies

What are some of the greatest tragic movies you've seen? Help me build my list.

American History X
Titanic
Terminator 2
A Walk To Remember
Gladiator
Artificial Inteligence
Million Dollar Baby

Brack 03-27-08 08:06 AM

LOL @ Terminator 2.

riotinmyskull 03-27-08 08:18 AM

Kids

John Galt 03-27-08 08:31 AM

Shane
Bambi

Hiro11 03-27-08 08:48 AM

Most tragic movies I've seen:

10. Leaving Las Vegas
9. Bullet in the Head
8. When the Wind Blows
7. Paths of Glory
6. Au Revoir les Enfants
5. The Deer Hunter
4. Pan's Labyrinth
3. Lilja 4 Ever
2. Children Underground
1. Grave of the Fireflies

Kids in tragic movies, especially in stories based on reality, are just unbearable to me... Those last three I never want to see again and wish I could un-see if you know what I mean.

Terminator 2  aside, would most people consider Gladiator to be a tragedy? Yes, his wife and child are murdered, but he becomes a hero, takes down a despot, and ultimately gets a happy ending, reuniting with the loved ones in the afterlife.

My vote goes to Atonement.

John Galt 03-27-08 09:39 AM

The Vanishing (I still consider this to be the best ending I've ever seen to a movie, I just wish it weren't a foreign film so I could get my friends to watch it.)

Ratcatcher

Requiem for a Dream. Doesn't get much more tragic than that.

I'd also say The Mist is pretty damn tragic, at least the ending is.

I would second Requiem for a Dream....Very Tragic.

I would also add Kids (1995) to the list.

Would Passion Of The Christ count? When I saw it in the theatre, it seemed that nearly everybody there was full of tears, although the ending got a huge round of applause.

Also, no one has mentioned Larry Clark's Bully yet.

The Passion of the Christ! Why did they have to kill poor ol' Jesus? If he would have lived, then everyone would have to pay for their sins which makes more sense...

Here are some other ones:
Schindler's List
Crossroads
Hotel Rwanda
New York Minute
Seven
Blonde Ambition
Platoon
Little Black Book
