Just seen Videodrome for the first time! WTF?

I can't believe I've only just seen this! I thought it was very good. My thoughts

Videodrome: 4/5

Disturbing, wierd and hard to watch at times and rather a mind-fuck also, but still a very good film.
I found the ending wierd/ambiguous:
Spoiler:
Did Max really kill himself in order to destroy Videodrome? Maybe that was part of their plan (to get them to kill himself) after all - Niki telling him what to do with the tapes meant she had died on Videodrome for real. Niki tells Max to "get rid of the old flesh" and he is shown killing himself on the screen...

Heh, I'll never forget the first time I watched this film. What more can you say but "Cronenberg."

It has been a long time since I have seen it so I cannot comment on the ending.

I just re-watched Scanners for the first time in several years the other night. Now there is a film crying for a bigger-budget (and better-acted) remake.

Now watch Naked Lunch and tell me which one was weirder.

Videodrome freaked me out.

Long live the new flesh!!!

When my girlfriend moved in, she started working her way through my movies. She told me she was going to watch this one while I was at work, and I received a phone call from her, asking what the hell it was all about. She was a little leery of movies she hadn't heard of after that, and I still haven't had the chance to show her Naked Lunch.

Me too. The first time I saw it, I was like "Holy crap, I'm never watching that again!" Then a couple of months later, I was like "Man...I really want to see Videodrome again."

I don't know if you can ever really "get" Videodrome, as in actually understand every single thing that happens, but it does make more sense on repeated viewings. One of the things that I didn't really fully grasp on my first viewing, but that comes through on repeated viewings is that Videodrome is basically a Sci-Fi take on 60 & 70's paranoid thrillers, like The Parallax View or The Manchurian Candidate. It's so surreal though, that it's easy to get lost by some of the more bizarre imagery. I haven't seen it in a while though, so I don't really remember what my take on the ending was. I remember basically what happens, but I'd need to see it in context again.

My most WTF moment was ...
Spoiler:
when he transformed that tech guy's hand into a ticking potato masher grenata.

What. The. Fuck. ?.

My only explanation is that from the moment
Spoiler:
Barry Convex put the "recording device" on Max's head he basically died in that room after hallucinating everything else in the movie.

I loved this movie from the very get go. I remember wishing I could do up my room with red, electrified clay.

Scanners IS being remade.

I just finished watching this for the first time (Comcast On Demand's Free Selection actually had a few interesting titles for once, and City of Lost Children in HD (!)), it was great seeing James Woods and Deborah Harry in their respective roles.

What freaks me out, is this movie actually applies just as well in current times as I'm sure it did back in the 80s. It's easily one of the strangest movies I've ever seen (And I've seen a lot of weird ass movie.) and am glad it's held in a relatively high regard in "cult terms" haha. Can certainly understand all the comments on how eXistenZ is a "Remake for modern times" but jesus, Videodrome makes eXistenZ look mainstream.

Great stuff. Can't help but wonder if Shinya Tsukamoto is a huge fan, as his flicks seem to borrow a lot of common threads (Tetsuo I & II, Snake of June).

Necro bump! We may have the Criterion Collection Bluray for Videodrome but for those in L.A. The Cinefamily will be screening a 35mm print June 6th. It's a midnight one night only show. I've got my couch reserved!

Videodrome is the best William S. Burroughs homage ever made.

Are you like me - when your significant other sees a movie that you enjoy, but she hates or doesn't understand, she wonders what the hell is wrong with you - and then starts making comments as if YOU were the one that wrote and directed the film? :)

Videodrome, Naked Lunch and Lynch's Eraserhead make for a great triple feature.

Your brain might be so scrambled afterwards that you'd be unable to speak. I went to a double-bill of Voice of the Moon and Eraserhead. My brain was so scrambled by Fellini that I skipped the Lynch because it was late at night and I wanted to get some sleep. I still regret it.
