The character was exactly what made me think of Rocky Balboa

I was responding to the post above mine where PopcornTreeCt was comparing The Wrestler to the last Rocky movie. PopcornTreeCt said the Rocky movie was pure Hollywood fiction while implying that The Wrestler was a true story because it was shot documentary style. My point was simply that they are both Hollywood fiction and the only thing real about The Wrestler is that they used real indy wrestlers and real indy feds.

I do understand his point because, as I stated a few pages back, a bunch of the indy workers in the movie used to work for me a few years ago. So to me it had an even more realistic feel to it than most people but it is still just pure Hollywood fiction.

It was right under Popcorn's post. Wasn't that hard to figure out what he meant

I don't know I just didn't see any of that. Rocky didn't want to fight, while Ram only wanted to wrestle. A video game dictated Rocky's come back... a video game showed how much Ram lived in the past.

Just saw this last night but

Spoiler:
Am I the only one that thinks that Pam was still waiting backstage for him to finish and just didn't want to see him if he died in the ring? I mean, she essentially quit her job because she loved the guy. I doubt she'd just leave. Especially after she saw how much the crowd loved him.

Congrats to Rourke and Tomei on getting Oscar noms. Both were great performances and I'd love to see Rourke get it.

They started the film early and I walked in on the opening credits.
Spoiler:
Then there is a super "20 years later" Was there a scene before the credits?

You didn't miss anything. The camera pans over Randy "The Ram" Robinson "vintage" wrestling magazine clippings with some "vintage" audio play-by-play of The Ram's bouts during the opening credits. The film opens with the "20 years later" title that you saw.

Don't forget the big-haired thud of Quiet Riot's "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" on the soundtrack.

Looks like the Weinstein company silently opened up Rourke's Killshot this weekend in 5 theaters in Arizona with no marketing or anything.
I was trying to find the Killshot thread but no luck.

Re: 'The Wrestler' D:Daron Aronofsky, w/Mickey Rourke

I have to say while Rourke and Tomei were exceptional I think the script lacked that one pivotal moment to really set it over the top into greatness. As it was it was a depressing look into the world of professional wrestling on a small scale and into the world of a lost human being on a larger scale. It never had that gut-wrenching moment, where you really felt for "The Ram", it just played out a little too straight forward for me.

I finally got to see this on Friday night and all I have to say is......it dethroned The Dark Knight as my favorite and best movie of 2008. Heartwrenching and spectacular.
