It was hilarious the first half, but the second off dropped off like crazy and the heartfelt moments didn't work. Still laughed my ass off a bunch and would recommend it.
7/10 |
The funniest parts were in the trailers so watching it wasn't that funny anymore. The most really went south after the first half.
Grade: C |
I just saw it also, and it seems like most of us agree on the flaws of the flick. I'd give it something in the 7/10 range as well, with the first half of the flick way better than the second.
I left the theater feeling about Step Brothers, the exact same way I left the theater feeling about Drillbit Taylor. Lots of laughs, so many that just as many fail as work, mixed in with a plot that can barely stay together. I hated that one of my favorite parts of the trailer wasn't even in the movie. Care to guess what I'm talking about? |
The office interview scene is WAY funnier in the redband trailer IMO. Other missing scenes seem to be the car/lawn/convenience store. "This house smells like ben gay and barbeque sauce!" and my favourite line when he's burying Dale
Dale:"My Dad's gonna wonder where I am!?" Brennan: "He'll NEVER know you're gone!" Certainly the casualties from trailer to screen were far less than most McKay/Ferrell movies (Anchorman being the biggest offender IMO). |
A lot of the material from the red band trailer and the deleted scenes off Funny Or Die are a lot funnier than what ended up in the movie.
At least all of the Anchorman material made it on the (now OOP) two-disc set. |
Given that Superbad and Walk Hard came to Blu-ray (and DVD) guns ablaze with deleted material and the Line-O-Rama's, I can see this getting the same treatment.
And yes, after quoting "This house smells like Bengay and barbecue sauce!" a LOT since the red band was released, I was disappointed to not see it in the final film. However I expect it to show up on the inevitable release. |
Loved it, hilarious start to finish. Better than Anchorman IMO. 3.5/4

Overall, funny, but nowhere near Anchorman or Superbad, the two best comedies of the decade, for me. Also liked Pineapple Express a bit better I think, it was more consistent and relied much less on the profanity. |
I think the release schedule for these flicks was pretty well thought out. Step Brothers first, followed by Pineapple Express, followed by Tropic Thunder, with each one being funnier than the last...(I haven't seen PE, but going on Quake's opinion, which I've heard from others seems to be about right...). Works way better than if TT had come out first and these other flicks had to play in it's wake.

Worth seeing?
I'm a big Will Ferrell fan but after Semi-Pro, I still have a sour taste in my mouth |

Wouldn't say it's Will Ferrell "best", but certainly his funniest. |
yeah I thought it was pretty funny, not really great but delivered the laughs none the less, a good bounce back from Semi Pro. Some great quotes too "I totally tea bagged your drum set" "What if she sees my chest pubes and follows it down to my ball fro"

I saw this last night. Both my gf and I thought it was pretty dumb. Bad script, bad improv and no great supporting players. This was much weaker than it should have been. Lots of swearing doesn't equal funny. Nothing really made us laugh out loud except for a couple scenes we barely remember. I was hoping Ferrell was back to his A-game with this one, but I see that isn't the case. Reilly should stick to drama.

Saw it again last night, this one's gonna get better every time, I was at work giggling thinking about the lines.
Spoiler:
|
Anyone else find it a bit odd that one of the current TV spots is nothing but a completely different take of the bunkbed scene (where Riley is already on the top bunk, saying it is "as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar" before it crashes)?
I hope that the above take isn't used in the inevitable unrated DVD. I don't mind when entirely new scenes are added on "unrated" DVDs, but I get miffed when an already good scene is replaced by a less funny take or line (Champ and Brick's lines in the post-party conference room scene on the Anchorman DVD comes to mind). Hopefully, the theatrical version of the movie will be included with the unrated version, like Apatow's Walk Hard. |
There are a ton of alternate takes for this movie. I've seen 3 different takes of the Bunk Bed scene and 3 for the interview session.
And I haven't actually seen the movie yet. |
I saw this last week and thought it was very funny. The second half didn't drop off as much for me as it did for some of you. it seemed like who ever cut the trailer just had access to footage from the first 20 minutes.

Way late to the party
"You both know this is fucked up
Yep... yeah we do But Brennan sure can wear the fuck out of that pirate hat." I laughed my ass off at this. |
Re: Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)
This movie gets funnier the more I watch it. I didn't think it was all that great at first, but my roommates watch it constantly and I can't help but laugh.

Re: Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)
I've watched the blu-ray at least 4 times since I got it... I fucking love this movie. (great commentary too).
"The Fuckin' Catalina Wine Mixer!" |
Re: Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)
Absolutely! I think this has become my favorite Will Ferrel movie.
And all the deleted scenes and alternate takes are just as good as anything in the movie. "Fancy Sauce? That's all you had to say!" |
Re: Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)
That guy from the John Stewart show doing the 'Pow' routine.
Man I laughed all the way through this movie. |

Re: Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)
I thought it was outstanding, 8/10. Every scene with the brother's wife cracked me up.

Re: Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)
The movie had lots of great lines, but the one that seems to get me the most is Dale's indignant protest "But dad, it's shark week". That line just seemed to come out of nowhere.
