Paranoid Park (Van Sant, 2008) — Murder drama set in Portland, Oregon

IMDB | HD Trailer

An unsolved murder at Portland’s infamous Paranoid Park brings detectives to a local high school, propelling a young skater into a moral odyssey where he must not only deal with the pain and disconnect of adolescence but the consequences of his own actions.

Looks like this got a prize at Cannes and was picked as one of the top movie of 2007 by Cahiers du cinéma. It looks good (better than Last Days at least) although I doubt it will get anything beyond a limited release so I'll have to catch it once it hits video.

Far from Van Sant being "up his own artistic anus", I thought Paranoid Park was an incredibly effective look at teenage behaviour, both apparent and of the psyche. There are incredibly in-your-face examples of artistry, and some seem to be too much, but there are also instances where such sequences work very well. A narratively refreshing work well worth checking out if it comes near.

Can't wait to see this due to the use of Elliott Smiths songs in here.

I didn't know that. I may have to check it out, for that. Although, that does also seem like a bit of repeating himself (after Good Will Hunting, which I really like, but more for the screenplay and acting than direction). I believe Thumbsucker also relied heavy on Elliott Smith songs, and I didn't find that movie particularly amazing. Then again, Gus had nothing to do with that, so I reckon that's irrelevant. I've only seen My Own Private Idaho and Good Will Hunting, so I'm not sure if I particularly care for his work.

No wait, I saw half of Last Days and that was enough. Well, if my Blockbuster has it when I return 21, I'll consider it.
