When does this come out? I thought it was Friday, but there's no reviews? No buzz? Nothing?

pinata242 08-14-08 07:48 AM

There's this thread that had the most recent talk: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread....3&page=1&pp=25

Reviews are embargoed until Friday, but there is one review in there from AICN that I scraped before it was yanked.

Both Harry and Massawyrm's reviews were negative but I managed to grab both of them also.

There's also a lot of positive reviews out there that consistently comment on how it re-captures the "fun" of the OT, so it's really going to be a word of mouth thing.

29% on RT. That's all I gotta say.

Just saw it and really enjoyed it. That's all I gotta say.

Ziro the Hutt - that's all I gotta say.

I realize this is STAR WARS, but lets not kid ourselves. This was put to the back of Summer in order to advertise a television show. It was a fun movie, and one that I'll own.

For everyone jumping on the bandwagon of haters, remember a very GOOD animated feature came out years ago called "Batman Mask of the Phantasm", it made six million dollars in its ENTIRE run, and was a nice advertisement for a terrific animated series.

Batman is a big franchise with A LOT of fanboys, but I can't recall everyone and his mother coming out of the woodwork to blast that film for failing.

Clone Wars isn't as good as Mask of the Phantasm, but it certainly doesn't deserve the vitriol it's receiving.

The Batman animated series had already been airing for a year when that film was released though, so at least there was fan sentiment that the ones heading the project knew how to handle Batman well. With The Clone Wars, Lucas's most recent track record with the series does not lend an confidence in this most recent entry in the saga, nor much forgiveness among fanboys. You are right that both projects have apparently been met mostly with indifference by the general public though.

Considering that Mask of the Phantasm came out in 1993, it's likely you weren't on the internet at that point. But if you want a negative opinion from that era of the internet:

Bottom line: BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM belongs on the small screen. Only kids and comic-book fans are likely to forgive the stiff animation and messy narrative. Let's hope that Joel Schumacher does a better job in 1995 with BATMAN 3.

Also, fanboys aren't blasting the film for failing financially. Rather, they're blasting the film because it either looks awful to them or they saw it and feel it is awful. That it's something of a bomb is just schadenfreude icing on the lambasting cake.

I had a fun time with this movie. This is obviously aimed at kids, but there's nothing wrong with that. I'll defenitely buy the DVD. The only things I didn't like were the animation, some of the humor, and Jabba's Uncle{seriously, WTF?}.

Were there any over night campers like the last 5 STAR WARS movies waiting to see this?

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Exiting the preview screening Tuesday night, I noticed members of a local Star Wars podcast already waiting in line for opening day.

May the Force -- and mercifully few others -- be with them.
