I'll take it. I've been thinking about this movie ever since a strange and contentious thread in Music Talk. It is one of my favorites(the movie, not the thread).

No, but this is a literary adaptation of sorts and there are thematic similarities between the two movies. These first shots have been somewhat misleading; they don't reflect the look of the film as a whole.

This film is most often associated with a particular striking image and I've tried to avoid that image in my shots.

Spoiler:
Both movies deal with psychosexual trauma. I figured a shot of the wrapped-in-TP dance sequence would be too easy

I've been trying to track down a clue of some sort based on that music forum comment you made, but have had no luck. My search went off on a weird Jack Palance tangent based on a post you made, and I managed to stop myself from randomly guessing that it was one of the Gor movies.

Mentioning the Music Talk thread may have been more cryptic than I had intended, but it is what made me pop in this movie again. Let's just say there is a recording artist that is on record as being a fan of this movie. In fact, the artist is mentioned on the cover of the DVD as having "championed" the movie on its North American release. Here's a more representative shot:

Two of the people in this movie play dual roles - one of them went unnoticed by me for years, even though the evidence was right there in the credits.

Spoiler:
That's right, Madonna likes this movie, at least when she's not bare-handedly killling horses and feasting on their flesh. It took me a long time to figure out that the lead actor, while playing the character in his teens and thirties, also plays the character's father.

The first three shots are from a movie watched by our main character. Here is one of the dual roles:

Nope. There was an unrelated recent movie with the same English title as this one. There are also a number of songs and albums with the same title.

This movie is told in three sections over thirty years.
EDIT: Oops, that should be twenty years.

This scene never fails to get to me.

I'll be out for a bit, so the third letter of first six cast members listed at IMDB gives us the code SECNIR.

Sunshine (1999)? That fits a number of Luther's clues, but I have to confess I've never heard of the movie.

Whoops - forgot the letter check - that isn't it either.

Only the last third (and some aspects of the middle third) of the film is truly an adaptation, taken from a short story by a widely shoplifted author. This third of the movie was originally produced as a short, called "Foggy Night," which is not the name of the short story it was taken from. When this movie was initially released in the late '80s, it was given an English title more suggestive of said author's work.
Here again is one of the dual roles:

Spoiler:
Bukowski's The Copulating Mermaid of Venice, California and portions of Ham on Rye - it was initially given the title Love is a Dog from Hell

Oh, I have that on an old bootleg video, but haven't watched it in years. I remember the middle episode being by far the best.
