Why the hell does Ackroyd yell "POPCORN!" in Grosse Point Blank?
 

My sister and I saw this movie back when it came out and we laughed our ass off when Ackroyd yelled Popcorn out of the blue before getting hit with something. We havent seen the movie since but we sometimes yell it out for shits and giggles and we never got why he said it.

...just watched the film on a recommendation. It was a decent mid 90s flick with (at the time I suppose) some hit singles and a good soundtrack. I like the idea, but the movie certainly didn't feel polished. A few laugh out loud moment, but nothing great. It's possible I'll appreciate it more next time I catch it, but I'm okay if that is some time from now.

Hopefully I don't sound like a tool if this is a cult-classic of sorts. I know my friend sounded like he didn't have any taste a year ago when he came into the office finally having watch Princess Bride saying it wasn't that good.

"Cult-classic of sorts" is probably the best way to describe it actually. The humor has a unique sensibility and there is so much witty dialogue along with a solid soundtrack and a score by Joe Strummer of Clash fame. A lot of the humor isn't so much "laugh out loud" as it is "chuckle when you think about it." it is a little unpolished, but that's part of its charm.

film soooo needs an upgrade....been waiting for how many years now?!

Wow. I can't believe Grosse Point Blank is being referred to as a "decent mid-90's flick." I mean, it is sort of a mid-90's flick (if you call '97 the middle) but that just sounds so demeaning. GPB is one of those movies that never gets old. Not for one moment did I think the film felt unpolished... not with a script like that. The film for all its eccentricities just felt, for lack of a better term, organic. It's the age-old "you can't go home" story, except this time the everyman happens to be a hit man. The simplicity of the story is the beauty. Martin Blank is like the rest of us - awkward, embarrassed, self-conscious... futilely trying to regain a small portion of his childhood. GPB never strays into mindless thrills at the expense of the real and natural humor that comes about through the script's brilliant characterization of the lead.

I dunno, this is one of those rare movies with which I can find no fault. The whole thing - rhythm, tone, music, acting, character development - just felt pitch-perfect.

Yeah... and where's our DVD update?

This is one of our all-time favorite movies (the wife and I) - and not just cause we're from Michigan;) If you don't like dark subtle humor, it might not be for you, but it's definitely an above average comedy. I would kill for at least an anamorphic upgrade to the current disc. Minnie Driver has gotten more annoying to me over the years, but there's enough of John and Joan Cusack and Dan Akroyd that I'm able to deal with it.

I'd quote the movie, but the jokes really need to be in context to make you laugh - and yes we DO Laugh out loud at this movie, not just mild chuckles;)

I can't believe I still haven't seen it yet ;) I'm a huge fan of the Ice Harvest - excellent film from start to finish regardless of what anyone says. My dumb ass has to rent this one day.

On topic - even though I haven't seen it, I like the popcorn reference.

A personal favorite. Whip-smart dialog and a killer soundtrack. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll ever get a SE of this, at least as long as Buena Vista owns the rights. A good film choice by Ackroyd in a sea of poor ones. The guy's been in more bad movies than John Carradine.

You don't happen to mean David Carradine, do you?

What, you didn't like National Lampoon's Homo Erectus? Actually, I really shouldn't bust on John Carradine. When you're in 339 (!) movies, there's bound to be a few hundred stinkers. His quality work in a handful of John Ford movies is negated by Vampire Hookers and Astro Zombies however, though the latter did inspire a good Misfits song.
