I love Event Horizon

This movie has been panned six ways from Sunday, but I love it. I got a wild hair up my ass to watch it waiting for my favorite cartoons.

A sci-fi H.P. Lovecraft story. Awesome. The basic fear of a theological VS scientific society explored. The fact that ultimate knowledge (bending space) leads to Hell. Awesome. Characters: I love each and every one. Sam Neill as an understandable demon?(classic Lovecraft) Killer set and costume design?

I love it. Feel free to disagree.

Plus: what about the ending? IMO the devil reclaimed the key and will win. Kinda like the end of Carpenter's Prince of Darkness.

Kevin Phillips 02-09-08 12:04 PM

No disagreement from me. It's been a few years since the last time I've watched it, but I really enjoyed it.

Rival11 02-09-08 12:25 PM

I've always loved it and it's definitely an uderrated flick. I thought the casting was excellent as well. Not one complaint.

Kudama 02-09-08 12:34 PM

Just had to post one of my favorite lines that I just heard:

*push* *smack!* "Well you break all the laws of physics and you seriously don't think there'd be a price?" *spoken in anger*

Lovecraft, baby. One of the best Lovecraft movies yet. Now if del Torro gets started....Holy Heck.

One of PW Andersons few watchable movies. Sunshine reminded me a lot of it.

I think it's the only film Anderson hasn't half-assed. I'd love to see a Director's Cut sometime with all the deleted gore footage reinstated. I've always thought it was one of the creepiest flicks I'd ever seen, and that because so much of what's doing the haunting is unknown. It's like Legend of Hell House or The Haunting, but in space. Very atmospheric. The new DVD has a great DTS track that really amps up the sound to an alarming level. I remember seeing this in theaters and having it scare the crap outta me, and I NEVER get scared in movies.

Dr Mabuse 02-09-08 03:49 PM

it's been free on comcast on-demand for a good while...

so i've played it in the background several times and actually watched it twice...

thegame370 02-09-08 05:57 PM

Its definetly one of my fav films ever! Very creepy and extremely atmospheric, with a great story and charcters to boot, this one is  for sure!!!

I agree that it is underrated. I watched this as part of a double feature (remember those). I think it is one of the better Sci-Fi films out there.

milo bloom 02-09-08 07:30 PM

I rented it once not long after release and I still remember actually mostly liking it. I think about picking up the DVD every now and then, but I wonder if it's better left as a positive memory?

I thought exactly the same thing, however Sunshine has been praised as a godsend.

Go figure.

DVDho78DTS 02-09-08 08:18 PM

Every time a discussion pops up about it I want to watch it again, but after I do I can't remember anything about it. It's one of those movies that I find forgettable, like I've never watched even though I have 2 or 3 times. Eerie.

FWIW, Sunshine had a better head on its shoulders. Both had a similar atmosphere of dreadful inevitability.

It's a completely forgettable flick in my opinion, yet I'm drawn to it ever so often. One of my favorite guilty pleasures, but I can't explain why....;)

Same here. Haven't watched in a while, but I really enjoyed it.

Good movie
:toast:

Is the "unrated" version worth picking up?

toddly6666 02-10-08 02:42 PM

For anyone that loves this movie and if you have a multi-region DVD player, you should pick up the PAL French Special packaging DVD:

Love it. Scared the crap out of me first time I saw it. Loved Sunshine too.

ericn101 02-10-08 04:17 PM

The mid to late 90's had alot of underated sci-fi. Some of my favorites from that era are Event Horizon, Supernova, The Fifth Element, and Alien Ressurection.

toddly6666 02-10-08 05:23 PM

Thirteenth Floor, Gattaca as well

Michael Corvin 02-10-08 07:12 PM

I really liked the Arrival which falls into that group as well.

mndtrp 02-10-08 07:36 PM

Excellent movie. I have Thirteenth Floor at home right now from Netflix, since I never seem to pick it up at the store.

R4 Australian edition is also available (probably cheaper).

What an awesome case! Too bad ps3 doesn't support PAL. Definitely a good flick imo. Very creepy and worth it to have the lights dimmed with a bowl of popcorn.
