Well, I've only seen GoodFellas once, and I definitely need to see it again (I picked it up recently with the intention to do just that), but I find Casino to be the livelier, interesting, easy-flowing and more entertaining movie. Perhaps it's the characters (I don't care for Liotta's Henry Hill the way I like Sam.

My memory of GoodFellas was that it was like "The Wonder Years" of mobster movies.

Goodfellas vs. The Godfather - now that would be a poll!

They're both great, but I like Goodfellas more. Joe Pesci's character in Casino (Nicky) is just a selfish dick who doesn't really give a rat's ass about his friends, whereas Tommy in Goodfellas was a psycho with a sense of humor who really does care about his friends. (Of course with friends like Tommy...)

Another thing is Ray Liotta. He was absolutely fantastic in Goodfellas, and he's not in Casino. Sure, DeNiro is great in Casino, and the supporting cast is great, but it really seems like something - or someone - is missing. Liotta.

The final thing that bugs me about Casino is the use of narration. There really isn't any more than in Goodfellas, but where it really works in Goodfellas it seems overdone in Casino - like there wasn't really a need for some of it and it detracts from the story, where in Goodfellas the narration really drives the story.

But all of that is, to a degree, nitpicking. Like I said, they're both great movies - I just like Goodfellas more.

Well considering that my Goodfellas dvd/Blu-Ray gets far more playing time than the shitty flipper disk Universal put out in '05, My vote goes for Goodfellas.

The pace in Casino is great throughout the beginning but once we get to the downfall and all the Ginger scenes it just tends to be boring. Definitely the slowest part of the movie. The Vegas atmosphere definitely made it one of my favorite movies. The wardrobe alone is just a reason to watch it.

Goodfellas just has a great vibe throughout the entire movie. The food, the music, the drugs etc. If there was a neutral option in this poll, i'd probably be neutral. It's hard.

GoodFellas no contest. Casino is good but Stone ruined a lot of it for me. Wish they would have cast someone better in that part.

Goodfellas. The whole Sharon Stone subplot in Casion was unnecessary(IMO).

Another one of those cases where the responses are about even, but the poll results are a shut-out.

Casino, BTW.

I like them both. I have to say though, that whenever I'm flipping channels and see Casino on cable, I can't turn away from that movie!

I voted for Goodfellas but damn I do love Casino, Pesci ruled in that movie. "Charlie M? You made me pop your eye out for that?"

The best part of Casino, for me, is Don Rickles. The movie is campy eye candy, the way the Pacino version of Scarface is, only it has a better script. I'd say Goodfellas is a better film, but Casino is probably a more instantly entertaining stop if you're flipping channels on cable. It's the Roadhouse of gangster movies.

Goodfellas, IMO, is the better movie, much better. One of the biggest problems with Casino is Scorcese used the same two main characters: DeNiro and Pesci as he did in Goodfellas, and you sorta feel like Casino is a carbon copy in some senses of Goodfellas. Kinda the same way The Patriot is to Braveheart cause both feature Mel Gibson as the lead.

Goodfellas is just a great character study of the mob, as the characters are actually likeable in this movie, even though they are pure evil. Liotta really carries the film as he plays to perfection that mobster that has that innocence that a character like Pesci is the total opposite with no conscious.

Casino on the other hands drags alittle in the last hour once it solely focuses on Sharon Stone/DeNiro breakup, and even though Stone is great in this role, it seems to go on and on, as I believe Casino should have been as long as Goodfellas at 2 hours 25 minutes instead of 3 hours. The story is great in Casino, as I feel its the movies biggest asset, just to witness inner circle of a Casino and how it works, and how they spot cheaters is really telling, plus how they treat them too!

Overall, they are both enjoyable movies, but I feel Goodfellas is just a lean and mean mob flick that I can pop in anytime and enjoy the whole movie, while Casino is more of a movie I have to be in the mood for, plus there are parts that are OK in it that I would like to skip, and that usually means to me it isn't a great movie.

Re: Goodfellas or Casino

I watched Casino last night (not my first viewing), and I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but how terrible is the opening scene with the blatantly obvious dummy being blown up in the car? Seriously, it's some of the most amateur shit I've ever seen. I can't believe Scorsese was OK with that after reviewing the scene in the editing room.

I do like the movie though. And to answer the OP, I prefer Goodfellas.

It is a very Benny Hill moment.

Re: Goodfellas or Casino

I wouldn't even put Casino as Scorsese's number 2 film in the 90's, I'd put both Goodfellas and Bringing Out The Dead ahead of it.

Casino is a good movie. GoodFellas is a great movie. I don't even think they're in the same ballpark.

GoodFellas vs. The Godfather (or The Godfather II) is a more interesting argument.

Casino isn't even one of Scorsese's top 5 films IMO. On the other hand, Goodfellas is.

This is the correct answer.

Goodfellas moves so fast and there is not a single wasted scene. Casino for the first good hour or maybe hour and a half is the same. As soon as it starts getting into Sharon Stone more in Casino it starts becoming boring. They are both incredible movies and i truly love Casino, but Goodfellas is a masterpiece.

Oh, and for my money its better than the Godfather any day of the week. I love the Godfather, but its a slower paced movie and whereas i could easily watch Goodfellas start to finish any time, the same could not be said of any of the Godfather movies.

Re: Goodfellas or Casino

I thought Casino ran on too long. That doesn't happen to great movies.

Goodfellas is a great movie.

I'd go with Godfather over Goodfellas, but that's because I prefer the grand atmosphere to the jittery one.
