Are the old classic Sci-Fi thrillers any good?
I've heard of old classic from the 40's, 50's, 60's etc such as War of the Worlds, Forbidden Planet, It Came From Outer Space, and The Day the Earth Stood Still but haven't seen any of them.
Would you recommend any of these? I enjoy UFO type films and really enjoyed Speilberg's version of WotW, and M.Knight's Signs. I also heard the original The Thing is good...is this true? Are there any classic sci-fi dvd box sets you'd recommend? |
From that list I would suggest original War of the Worlds, and The Day the Earth Stood Still.
If you like current sci-fi for the ACTION sequences, then don't expect all too much from these older sci-fi films, as you will be quite bored and disappointed. |
Definitely! I grew up on 50's sci-fi. The Thing, The War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, The Day the Earth Stood Still, hell even the Steve(n) McQueen version of The Blob. Those are all a blast. And The Day the Earth Stood Still is a genuine classic.
And there are a few more I left out since I haven't seen them yet like the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Forbidden Planet. |
Absolutely! I love old classic sci-fi flicks. Here's a small list of some titles I recommend checking out:

OK three questions: 1)Does the Best Buy Scifi collection contain all the films you listed above? 2)Why don't I see the Best Buy Collection at DDD? 3)On a slightly semi-unrelated note, is the series Firefly any good if I like sci-fi? I've heard nothing but good things about it. |
Older sci-fi can be tricky for younger people these days, since the genre often involves special effects - which is the one element of these movies that dates the worst. Some people can never get around the primitive special effects, no matter how good the story. Only you can tell if you're one of those people or not.
Some excellent suggestions. Try out the very best first, and work your way from there. My favorite oldie sci-fi is Forbidden Planet. Even though the effects are dated, they're still nice to look at - and it's a first class story. War of the Worlds is another that should still hold up. Fantastic Yoyage and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are other oldies that are among the best of their time.
