Goodfellas or Godfather

I doubt there is much argument that Godfather is a better film, you may find many people arguing that Goodfellows is a more enjoyable movie.
Although I love both and think Godfather is better, I fully admit to having watched Goodfellows about 3X as often. It is certainly more realistic than Godfather.

two very different films...one is a Visconti-esque operatic (The Godfather) take on a tradionally B-Movie theme (gangsters). While the other is a more "every man" (neorealist in the most liberal use of the term) drama that details a personal rise and fall. Of course symbolism and metaphor for greater ideas can be read into both (and I believe they should be), but in regard to how the films were shot and the respective goals of the directors, these films are quite different. Sort of like comparing Titanic to an indie film set on a cruise ship. That being said, I voted for The Godfather as I find them both of equal standing, but the "scope" of The Godfather gave it a little bump.

Goodfellas vs Godfather 1 AND 2!!! Unfair fight!
I will echo that the films are apples and oranges in some respects... but to be fair, they both exist in the cannon of notable gangster films... I would imagine any conversation of gangster movies should contain these 2 (or 3) influential films. Plus it's a question that I've debated a lot...
So, if I had to pick between only ever being able to watch one of the two selections... I'd have to go with Godfather 1 and 2... but... I voted Godfather (1 only!) vs. Goodfellas and 'Fellas won.
Don't know why, but it's what I felt, ya know, in my heart.
Curious enough, my GF had never seen Goodfellas and I asked her the very same question after the movie was through... she like Goodfellas a lot but she said Godfather all the way. Maybe it has to do with which film you saw first... for me I didn't see Godfather (at an age I could appreciate it) until my senior year of High School when I wrote a paper on it.
I was totally watching the hell out of Goodfellas all through the 90s.

^ I think you may need to re-watch both films. They both stress family (and "family"), but do so in different ways. I would certainly balk at calling The Godfather "conservative" in anyway shape or form. Like Goodfellas it glorifies gangsters, but thanks to its scope and where in the gangster food chain its characters lie, The Godfather gets to show a lot more elite corruption (head of the movie studio, certain politicians). If anything Goodfellas may be the slightly more conservative film as it ends with the system winning out and anticipates the turning state's evidence practice that will eventually cause the mafia to collapse on itself, in The Godfather the system loses, in Goodfellas it wins out.

The Godfather is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. Part II and Goodfellas are both amazing films, but the original is cited so many times for a reason - It's simply a flawless work of art.

I sometimes wonder if it's an age thing, but someone will probably prove me wrong.
I was 16 when GoodFellas came out and loved it from day one. The Godfather 1 & 2 are obviously well crafted films, but they just don't do the same thing for me that GoodFellas does.
I probably didn't see the Godfather movies in their entirety until the DVD set came out in 2001, so I do feel like I gave it a spin with my "adult" sensibilities. I don't dislike the Godfather, but I wouldn't put it near my top 25 personal favorites, where GoodFellas is easily in the top 10.

I prefer the Godfather.
But only because it's the GREATEST TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO THOUSAND FRAMES OF PICTURE TO EVER BE COMMITTED ONTO CELLULOID AT ANY TIME AND IN ANY PLACE IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, BY MAN OR ANY FORM OF UNDISCOVERED BEING!

They are both awesome and each of them - in their own inimitable way, so I don't see a reason to compare them. And even if I did I couldn't say which is better.
