Cloverfield box office predictions thread

In the tradition of Snakes on a Plane and The Simpsons Movie prediction threads, what are everyone's thoughts on opening weekend and total gross for Cloverfield?

I say:

35 mil opening weekend

115 mil total

Shannon Nutt 01-15-08 05:32 PM

I think you're in the ballpark...I would go a little lower. Maybe $26 million opening; $85 million total domestic.

juanmgonzalez 01-15-08 05:34 PM

$29 Million; $92 Million total domestic

DVD Josh 01-15-08 05:37 PM

$18M $65M gross. Much better on home video.

JPRaup 01-15-08 06:07 PM

35 mil

Chrisedge 01-15-08 06:10 PM

$39m weekend $120M total US

islandclaws 01-15-08 06:11 PM

Opening: $37.8m (for the Jan record)

Total: $84.9m (although if good word of mouth spreads it could go over $100m)

True_Story1011 01-15-08 06:19 PM

Opening: 42m
Total: 168M

Sessa17 01-15-08 06:20 PM

$46.7 million US domestic opening.

$146 million total US gross.

OldBoy 01-15-08 06:23 PM

yeah, i don't think this will be as big as it thinks it will be. the whole guerrilla style shooting is played out and this type of movie screams smooth and clean shots, at least for my taste anyway.
$25-28 mil. just bc it will play in a million theaters on a million screens and then pitter out to roughly $50-60 mil.

clemente 01-15-08 06:23 PM

It going to be bitterly cold in much of the midwest with some possible heavy storms in the Northeast....so I'm going on the lower end and saying 32.5 million.

i'm in the NE and nothing predicted round here.

jPoD_TGN 01-15-08 06:32 PM

30M opening 90M total gross.

BullGooseLoony 01-15-08 06:53 PM

I'm going to go out there and say that since there has not been a big blockbuster movie in about a month, and that this one seems to be getting a lot of pre-release hype, I'm guessing that this could break the record for biggest all-time January opening. My guess:

Opening: $48 million
Domestic Total: $120 million

d2cheer 01-16-08 06:27 AM

The football games will take some away, plus the JJ Abrams tag does not really mean anything in Box Office terms... $18-23 mill.

I have yet to find anyone interested in this at work, and they are generally a movie hungry crowd.

Mr. Cinema 01-16-08 06:35 AM

Well, if Big Momma's House 2 can score a $27 million opening during its January debut, I don't see why Cloverfield can't top that. $29.5 million.

acubfaninmd 01-16-08 08:23 AM

$45.5 million opening
$180 us box office gross

Patman 01-16-08 08:33 AM

$18 million opening weekend.

$45 million overall box office take.

ConVerse 01-16-08 09:26 AM

Lots of hype ...

PG-13 ...

I'm gonna say $45 million opening weekend.

Troy Stiffler 01-16-08 10:48 AM

Either 15 million or 50 million.

NitroJMS 01-16-08 05:14 PM

I'm guessing a $30 million weekend, or thereabout. It'll open strong on Friday and probably drop off by about half on Saturday and be very slow Sunday thanks to 2 big NFL games.

I just have a feeling the marketing is only going to draw people in to see this once and very early, and once the secrets/plot are out, it's going to sink like a stone.

That might be the best answer! I got a question today from a friend at work who isn't ignorant when it comes to upcoming films, he just doesn't spend his free time trolling film forums, and he honestly asked, "What's it about?"

My response: "Its about a giant Godzilla like creature that attacks New York City, filmed hand-held style"

Him: "Like the Blair Witch?"
Me: "Sorta, yeah"
Him: "That sounds dumb."

Its been a clever marketing strategy, but the question is whether its shown "enough" to get people interested enough to pay at the box office for it.

Zodiac_Speaking 01-16-08 10:15 PM

$29mil opening

$75mil overall

MasterofDVD 01-16-08 11:18 PM

I'd say a 25 ml opening weekend and maybe 115 million domestic.

There are people I work with that are normally so clueless about movies but each time I mention Cloverfield they all seem intrigued by the whole concept and marketing campaign.

Artman 01-16-08 11:22 PM

It's hard to gauge at my work, considering everyone's into movies and is eagerly anticipating it. Don't know what the average movie-goer thinks... Should do more than enough to cover it's budget though...and hopefully give us another one.
