The Golden Globes Awards 2008 appreciation thread

Awesome tv broadcast, no bullshit, just announcing the winners.

I would give this year's broadcast 4 stars or a grade of A.

Ronnie Dobbs 01-13-08 08:24 PM

I actually agree i watched about four minutes of it and its straight to the point. I could use a little less commentary from the blonde guy.

Patman 01-13-08 08:43 PM

Sorry, the after award comments by Billy Bush and Nancy are beyond vapid.

animatedude 01-13-08 08:55 PM

LOL@ this thread.

Geofferson 01-13-08 09:01 PM

Bush was a moron...but glad the winners were announced within 1 hour instead of 3.

tylergfoster 01-13-08 09:02 PM

I appreciate that Juno went home empty handed, thank goodness, and The Coens, Bardem, Blanchett, Pixar and the makers of "Extras" did not.

On the other hand, I don't appreciate Alec Baldwin not winning. Really, the moment he walked off the set after doing the "Good Times" bit they should have been there to hand him the award. And can we rename "Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy Television Series" to "The Jeremy Piven Appreciation Award for Excellence of Jeremy Piven" already?

zekeburger1979 01-13-08 09:09 PM

Biggest surprise for me was Julian Schnabel winning Best Director for The Diving Bell and The Butterfly and Atonement winning Drama. I thought that No Country for Old Men would win both.

As for my predictions, I was 9 for 25. Ouch! :)

Brack 01-13-08 09:42 PM

Sorry, I'm a fan of awards shows that center around what people are wearing. Then again, it was a complete night of no one thanking God, though it isn't so much a problem here as it is for music awards shows.

Daytripper 01-13-08 09:45 PM

The Cohen's WILL win at the Oscars. But what's up with "Atonement" beating "No Country" !?

Also, if the Oscars would just cut the damn songs and tributes, it wouldn't be a bad show.

Brack 01-13-08 09:48 PM

They didn't even show all the different categories, wtf?

Brack 01-13-08 09:54 PM

I wouldn't bet on it. And "Atonement"'s win is pretty typical of the GG.

Ronnie Dobbs 01-13-08 10:41 PM

so after seeing the winners on yahoo i have one word: yawn

Same here.

I like the Oscars and all but the Golden Globes are meaningless. I like looking up the TV winners though. Kinda cool to see Drama and Ari were up against each other.

Zen Peckinpah 01-13-08 11:59 PM

I always get pissed off by the Globes, mainly because they get pretentious (Julian Schnabel beating the Coens smells like the ceremony, and Atonement beating No Country gets me all Anton Chigurh inside) no matter how good those movies may be. NCFOM and the Coens will own the Oscars this year, period. Hence how Babel beat The Departed last year.

Hope Javier Bardem keeps his momentum and to see There Will Be Blood soon.

Arpeggi 01-14-08 12:30 AM

Julian Schnabel deserved his win.

Rogue588 01-14-08 01:06 AM

+1 to the WGA for making the "Foreign Press" cut out the bullshit and showing that there can be hour-long awards show.

-10 for having two vapid assclowns handle the ceremony.

mikelowry 01-14-08 07:40 AM

Without the stars, the Globe's a sorry sight.

NBC was doing a bullshit recap press conference from 9-10. CNN had the actual HFPA press conference and it took about 30 minutes and they did ALL THE AWARDS, without lame commentary from Billy Bush. I watched CNN with NBC pip...man did he have some lame comments.

Shocked at Atonement but think this will be it's only big win of the season.

Wow! No love here for Atonement? I thought it was a pretty fantastic film (I liked No Country, as well), easily one of the best of the year. I didn't necessarily think No Country was leaps and bounds above Atonement, but I know there's a lot of Coen love here...

As for the Golden Globes, never really watched 'em. Just would read about them the next day... so feels pretty much the same this year as every year... :)

I don't think anyone here (so far) is "hating" on "Atonement". I thought it was one of the year's best too. But not better than "NCFOM". It's a tough year for me because I thought "There Will Be Blood" and "NCFOM" are the best of 2007 (tied). And as much as I enjoyed "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", I don't think Schnabel deserves winning over the Cohen brothers.

chris_sc77 01-14-08 10:27 AM

It looked like they only spent about $45 on last nights "announcement ceremony". Not that I can blame them or anything, but still...

Giles 01-14-08 10:32 AM

I didn't even bother watching, instead watched and fell asleep on that Ryan Gosling/Anthony Hopkins stinker 'Fracture'

Huh? I thought that was a decent movie!

Back on topic. I didn't realize everybody had their own announcements show on this last night (E!, TV Guide Channel, etc). How sad.

Ronnie Dobbs 01-14-08 02:33 PM

I really can't wait to see what happens for the Oscars.
