So I met Cronenberg last night...

Really nice guy. The Arclight in Sherman Oaks was doing their AFI Director's Series and he was the guest for a Q&A after a showing of Eastern Promises. Most of the people picked asked some stupid questions, but he did sign for everyone afterwards. Of the quick q's my friend and I asked him he said he'd love to do horror/sci-fi again if the right script came along, he "personally, could do without" seeing his films remade (we told him about The Fly, Scanners and The Brood) and he was asked to do a Masters of Horror episode but couldn't due to time constraints. I had him sign my copy of The Fly dvd (that white cover begged for something more) and Naked Lunch: CC, plus I got a pic with the man.

Anyone else attend this screening or others like it? The Arclight is a beautiful theater and the intimate q&a sessions afterwards are a great way for fans to meet and talk to directors they normally wouldn't get that kind of time with.

Here's my pic, for those who care:

 Very cool.

That's sick. Congrats. HoV is the only film of his that I've seen, unfortunately, although I just received Videodrome in the mail.

Very cool. My favorite director of messed up movies ahead of David Lynch. Don't want to hijack the thread, but I've been dying to post how I met Mel Brooks in Vegas last week. I went up to him and gushed "I'm a huge fan; Spielberg, Hitchcock, Mel Brooks - the three greatest directors of all time."
He said "Spielberg Hitchcock Mel Brooks? Why couldn't you put me FIRST?"
My absolute highlight of 2007.

Very cool - but why didn't you ask him if he really ever intended on doing a sequel for Eastern Promises.......you let me down. ;)

Because someone else asked him... and he said if the right treatment came along he wouldn't be opposed to it. Although he also said that since the film didn't make $100 million he wouldn't expect it to happen anytime soon.

that's cool stuff...

DonnachaOne 01-10-08 05:02 PM

I like the Arclight too. I saw a Kevin Smith film festival there a couple years back.

toddly6666 01-10-08 05:49 PM

Eastern Promises would be great as a trilogy...

Johnny Zhivago 01-10-08 05:59 PM

Hella groovy.

TomOpus 01-10-08 08:30 PM

I met him at Comic-Con '05. He was very nice and unassuming. I guess I wasn't sure what he would be like in real life, considering some of the movies he's done. Oh, he was shorter than I expected

Geofferson 01-10-08 09:23 PM

Very cool -- nice picture too.

uncle-frank 01-10-08 09:42 PM

That's cool.

I met Oliver Stone once, during a show at U.C. Davis before JFK came out. He was a total dickhead. Self-important, snobby, and arrogant. I still like his work, but can't stand the man. Oh, well.

chente 01-11-08 01:43 AM

He's pretty fascinating to listen to. I recently listened to his commentary on History of Violence and really liked it.

That's weird, I met him a few months ago and he was thoughtful and engaging.

I met Cronenberg a few years back when the American Cinematheque in Hollywood was doing a retrospective. We discussed writing novels and adapting them to the screen. I also mentioned one of my teachers in film school was his sound mixer for The Dead Zone. Really nice guy.

mikelowry 01-11-08 06:13 AM

Way to go man!

dhmac 01-11-08 07:17 AM

Cool! And that's kinda funny how he doesn't like the idea of his films being remade when his film "The Fly" was itself a remake!

Toad 01-11-08 07:31 AM

Your thread almost got me to pick up Eastern Promises last night.

I opted for Superbad and Bourne instead for some reason.

I know what you mean. I expected him to be at least 6', for whatever reason. I'm 6' myself and I was a little surprised that he's only about 5'9" or so. Still, a very intelligent, thoughtful guy. It's always a great feeling to meet someone you really admire and they turn out to be ultra cool. There have been some people I've met who were dicks and it honestly ruined the experience of ever watching their films the same way again.

Toad... buy Eastern Promises now. You won't regret it. Hell, I'll refund the money for you if you don't, it's that good.

I'm a little hesitant b/c:

1) I'm a wuss about gangster movies. Seeing Pesci and his brother beaten and killed in Casino ruined me.

2) While I liked A History of Violence, I thought Viggo's performance and the older son's performance were off, and Maria Bello's anorexia (?) distracted the shit out of me.

Still, I'll likely give it a shot at some point.

A-aron 01-11-08 11:20 AM

I'd love to meet him and have him sign my photo of him in Nightbreed.
