"No good movie has ever included a hot-air balloon" (and other rules of thumb)

I saw this on Rules of Thumb:

"No good movie has ever included a hot-air balloon."

I couldn't think of anything to prove them wrong.

Some of the other ones were interesting too, like: "As a rule, the more you liked the novel, the less you will like the movie that is made from it."

If only the "V" weren't a miniseries. Damn. Almost.

Doesn't the Wizard of Oz have a hot-air balloon?

Yeah, but everyone knows how much of a flop that movie was

3 posts in and the thread is debunked.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen has a hot-air balloon as well.

Around the World in 80 Days? It did win an Oscar for 'Best Picture'

How about movies that take place in freezing snowy weather?

Sure, The Thing is freakin' awesome but there's not a whole lot to work with aside from survival stories or cheesy Disney films involving sled dogs.

BullGooseLoony 01-08-08 09:35 PM

In my opinion, no good movie has ever contained a hang glider:

Young Sherlock Holmes
Howard the Duck
Hudson Hawk
Wild Wild West

If you're making a big-budget fantasy movie, you probably shouldn't include a hang glider.

Also, The Chipmunk Adventure.

Ummm after all these "exceptions to the rule" tt seems that no bad movie contains a hot air-balloon.

What about Around the World in 80 Days within Jackie Chan?

I honestly haven't seen it, but it's Around the World in 80 Days within Jackie Chan, it can't be that good.

I haven't seen it either, but it's now looking like it's 'must see' material. I'm adding it to my neflix queue

Young Sherlock Holmes was good.

First movie that came to my mind when I saw the thread title. :)

RichDB10 01-09-08 07:11 AM

I for one thought 'The White Diamond' (Herzog) was pretty good.

 Same here.

wasn't there a hot air balloon in the Disney Halley Mills film 'In Search of the Castaways'?

also, not technically a full length film, there is definately a hot air balloon in the classic Imax film 'To Fly' and the best use of multiple aspect ratio, as the movie begins in a small windowboxed image, as the balloon floats up into the sky the entire IMAX screen height is revealed to amazing effect.

I'm stretching here, since it's not really a hot air balloon but the French short film 'The Red Balloon' has a scene that would qualify it as uplifting - I'm not giving away the scene since many might not have seen it, I think Criterion is rereleasing it later in the year with the short 'The White Mane'
