Run Fatboy Run (Simon Pegg) - 3/28/2008

Starring Simon Pegg, directed by David Schwimmer.

Looks pretty funny I'd say.

I think Thandie Newton could do better than either of the guys fighting for her, but eh, that's comedy for you. I laughed a bit at the trailer, hopefully this is good.

I can't wait to see this. Plus, a local band has a song in a pivotal scene, I'll be excited to see that.

David Schwimmer sat in front of me at the Toronto Film Festival during the premiere of "Into the Wild". He must have been there for this film.

It's got a 60 percent right now with 20 reviews on RT

not too bad for a comedy. Most of the complaints say its cliche.

But quite poor for a film headlining Simon Pegg.

Shaun of the Dead: 90%
Hot Fuzz: 89%

yet you have to figure in the chemistry between him and Nick Frost for those two movies ... would be interesting to see if Nick could do a movie without Simon, he's done a tv series in the past (sans Simon). Actually met Nick at a preview of 'Shaun' - what a really nice guy (can't say anything positive about Simon though).

This is released tomorrow in the UK, and I am very tempted to order it. There are a couple of other DVDs I am looking at getting at amazon.co.uk, and I might have to add this one as well.

This isn't an Edgar Wright film so let's not compare this to Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead.

Are you suggesting that Sean of the Dead wasn't a romantic comedy?

This film wasn't directed by Edgar Wright, but it was co-written by Simon Pegg, who co-wrote both Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so there is at least that basis for comparison. It was also co-written by Michael Ian Black , so considering the talent involved, this film is not as inventive and original a story as it potentially could've been. Plot wise, it's a fairly standard romantic comedy.

However, it's still a very well executed and funny romantic comedy. The film does take some risk in introducing Pegg's character as jilting his obviously pregnant fiancÚ on their wedding day. It's thanks to Pegg's performance that you don't instantly dislike him for what was such a jerk move. David Schwimmer, while obviously no Edgar Wright, does a good job delivering the material to the screen, showing a certain propensity for comedic timing.

I tend to agree, some really funny parts, but overall incredibly ordinary and cliche, especially when compared to Pegg's previous work (he's fine in the movie though). Didn't like the music selection. David Schwimmer's direction was a bit flat, but that isn't uncommon for first time movie directors whose only background is directing a few sitcom eps.

That all said, it is a charming, likable movie with good performances -- Hank Azaria is always a good douche bag and Thandie Newton is always hot. There is a surprising amount of heart in it as well. Dylan Moran and Simon Pegg should be in more movies together.

Recommended. 3 / 5.

When I first think of Shaun of the Dead, I would not consider it to be a romantic comedy. I would label it as a spoof of zombie movies.. that being said, I suppose it could be considered a romantic comedy... but I feel like you are implying that just because a movie contains humor and a 2 people in a relationship, that is is automatically a romantic comedy.

It was originally advertised as "A romantic comedy. With zombies." and became critically heralded as a "Rom-zom-com".

Agree. It's mediocre at best. I was deeply disappointed in this film. Trust me, it's not even in the same league as "Shaun" or "Fuzz". It's a completely predictable rom-com. There is absolutely no chemistry between Simon Pegg and Thandie Newton. You don't believe for a second these two were ever together or should be. David Schwimmer is a terrible director. And Newton is a terrible comedic actress. She should stick to dramas.
