Weird, didn't see a thread on this one. It opens in about a month: a limited release on Feb 18.

Can't wait. Best director currently making films.

I think WKW is the best director working today. But I caught this thing in Toronto and its a total misfire.

Yikes. Care to elaborate?

I might see it mostly because it's WKW.

Ya, when it played at the TIFF most of the reviews weren't positive.

I just saw it in Shanghai, China. Let me say it's a huge turd. I love 2046 and In the Mood For Love, but I think he made a mistake trying to direct English speaking actors and making a film in the US. Norah Jones is absolutely green in her acting ability. It's just uncomfortable to watch her bomb like this. It borders on ridiculous when her song is playing behind her dialogue. Natalie Portman is the best of the group. Probably one of the best roles I have seen her in, but it is small.

Now, my Chinese GF loved it. She hasnt much exposure to KWK. I think she was just excited to see any slice of American life. She loves movies, but we have a different way of viewing them obviously. She just isn't a critic. Any American film she is going to love.

CKMorpeus - Closer this is not . . . not by a longshot.

Oh and you can go check out my Myspace blog in the sig link below for my 3 movie experiences in China. Wow . . . if you think cell phones are a problem here in the USA . . .

EDIT: I just saw this in the NY Times article - “She’s a natural,” he said, adding that he had instructed her not to take acting lessons.

Like most of his films it's just a bunch of ideas attached at the hip. But for me, a combination of Norah Jones and an english script just demystified the whole thing. Also it's slow as hell. I mean, it makes Happy Together seem like it was edited by Michael Bay. On the plus side, even without Doyle the film looks beautiful..but thats about it's only redeeming quality.

I thought this was pretty good. I came in with low expectations having read the poor reviews and was pleasantly surprised. I'm sure I'm in the minority but I thought Norah Jones did an amazing job. She held her own with the highly celebrated cast. The plot was slow and I thought it strayed too far away. I didn't care about the other characters in the story but maybe that was the point? Overall, it was a much better film than 90% of what's out there although we're probably in the worst year for movies this decade, so that may not be such of a compliment. I think the reviews were bad because we expect much more from Wong Kar-Wai.

A Wong Kar-Wai film is like sex, even when it's bad, it's still pretty damn good.

LOVED this movie.

I thought everything was well done. At first I thought Norah Jones wasn't that great of an actress, but after a second viewing, she did just fine for her debut.

Heh, using that metaphor, I'd compare it more to a tired old lover who's trying so hard to recapture some old magic by utilizing his favorite techniques but doing so almost incompetently now. I really thought this was a complete mess from beginning to end.

I saw it twice in one week. Really enjoyed it, with the exception of Natalie Portman, one of the worst "actresses" working today.

I must be in The Twilight Zone, because this was the worst acted, worst scripted, worst film that I saw all year.
