Christian Slater - Will he ever really break out?

I've always been a moderate fan of Christian Slater, but I've never been able to totally understand his career. He's had moments where it looked like he was really going to break out on film, but in my eyes it's never really happened for him. Since True Romance in '93, it's been pretty rare for him to get much critical praise (again, just talking about film here). I thought for sure back then that he'd end up being far more than what he's at today. Is it because many consider him a poor-man's Jack Nicholson that he can't seem to break out past this certain level where he's currently at? I could really see him as one of those actors who doesn't really hit his stride until much later in his career.

Doing crap like Alone in the Dark certainly isn't going to help his case though.

Anyway, I saw his latest, "He Was a Quiet Man", and that's why I started thinking about this again. It was a great film, something different, and Slater was great in it, one of his best performances in many years in my eyes. Check it out sometime, it hits DVD on the 15th and I highly recommend it:

Probably not. But that's okay. He's been in pretty mediocre flicks overall.

He had his potential back in the 80's with stuff like Heathers and Pump Up The Volume, but I believe his time has passed and is destined to be bound by DTV.

That pretty much sums it up. He could've carved out a decent acting career for himself after those two teen classics, but he followed them up with the likes of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Kuffs. I'll forgive him for The Wizard since that was a minor role at best.

Unless he does some indie or TV series and gets noticed, the likelihood of him becoming popular again is zero...

He might've... if he were a really good actor. Slater is relegated to the roles he now gets for a reason: he not an amazing actor. He's good enough to get the acclaim he has, but actors that really break out do so for a reason: because they're that good.

Besides, could he ever do better than Gleaming the Cube?

At this point in his life he shouldn't have to worry about break outs. If one happens, some Noxema will take care of it.

This is kind of like asking if Ally Sheedy will ever hit the big time.

The correct answer is...no, he will not.

And that trailer was laughably bad.

This thread would have been relevant if it was 1990.

Travolta was washed up before Pulp Fiction, and it took a decade for him to be washed up again.

I thought he was good on that My Name is Earl episode.

That movie, "He Was a Quiet Man" looks very good. I can't wait until it gets released on DVD.

I think Christian Slater is a decent actor but not as the main star that has to carry a film. I liked Broken Arrow because of Travolta's performance as the villan. I liked Murder in the First because of Kevin Bacon's performance.

The one movie I can say he was very good in was True Romance. That is one of my favorites. Even that movie had a lot of supporting actors bringing their A game.

Having said that, I will check this movie out. It sounds like it could be decent.

As much as I hated Very Bad Things, Christian Slater's role in that movie is the kind of character and line delivery that he does better than most in such roles. He's pretty underrated if you ask me.
